Mind you IIRC Ski Pass is £70 guess ski hire £50 so then your spending what....£36per day for all your food & drink.... thats way too much allow £8-10 for an evening meal with as much beer as you could really handle . Lunch will be barely 2levs
Say at most £20 a day or £15 can be done, of course you could go to the supermarket and get things even cheaper if you wish. |

Author : Daniel snell (---.65.125.91.rb4.adsl.brightview.com) posts : 5663 Date : 02-05-08 16:40 Bloody hell I wish I could survive in Bansko on £300 for the week. After lift pass and ski hire that does not leave you much
Lift pass is not £70 unless you have booked a package holiday and even then it aint £70. In resort it is circa £105 And 2 Lev for lunch????!! Utter tosh that is not even 80pence. Lunch on the mountain will be closer to £10 with a drink.
Again dinner for £8-£10 with as much beer as you can.
handle?????? Blimey Welsh when did you last go in the 80s? Sarah expect to pay around £10 a head for 2-3 courses with maybe a beer each and then you will be doing well.
£20 or even £15 a day??!!! The only way to achieve this is if you are staying half board and eat only in your hotel and live like a monk during the day.
Sarah last March I guess my partner and I went through £400 for 1 week spends on 3 meals a day and plenty of beer/ wine at night this is on top of lift pass and ski hire. And we ate and drank at some very cheep places. But at none did we ever pay 2lev for lunch. |

Author : Welsh (167.83.9.---) posts : 78 Date : 02-05-08 17:08 Daniel - I went in Aug07.
Lunch is easily bought for 2levs - there are sdo many huge starters for that price, unless of course you need a 3 course meal for lunch as well as evening meal.
With the ski lift pass yes you are correct it is £105 before discount but that price includes the lift, ski boots, ski's, ski poles and 4 hrs a day ski school tuition. The £105 is for 6 days so given a time froma of only 5 days then its an option of 50levs a day or 280levs for 6 days they have a 3 day price too which I cannot recall.
10 = 26-29levs now in the summer we went out every night and I drink a lot 17stone+ weight we never spent more than 50 levs and that was with a 5-10lev tip. I'd say usually we'd have a minimum of 7-8 beers with the meal for me and a bottle of wine or two for the other half.
Beer at the hotels was 3 levs = roughly £1 beers in town is between 0.8 - 2.5levs. We didnt spend that much over 2 weeks there in the summer and that included a lot of trips to the Bears/Rila Monistry/Melinick & the steam baths & bbq's up the mountain.
Not been there in the winter season yet but am going 1st week in Apr so will be able to see if these prices are what I en up paying.
With regard the top of the ski lift most people I know who ski all take sandwiches with them as those places are highly pricy but certainly buy a guevine or two while up there. |

Author : IMT (---.range86-144.btcentralplus.com) posts : 238 Date : 02-05-08 17:34 £105 is for the 6 day lift pass ONLY. Does NOT include ski's, boots and lessons etc. You MAY get nearer to that figure from a Tour Op, but if you are booking as a DIY, it is £105 for the pass alone.
As you say, Welsh, you've not been in the winter. I think it will surprise you. Your about right on the beer prices though. |

Author : IMT (---.range86-144.btcentralplus.com) posts : 238 Date : 02-05-08 18:13 Ok Welsh, a few points I'd like to make. Don't take these the wrong way.
Skidvd link - where does that say anything other that what I have already said - 6 day lift pass 280lev - around £105 (or more wih current rubbish £).
Your second link is interesting - €259 for a full ski pack in Bansko. At current rates (1.34191 on xe.com) that is over £190. Not quite the £105 you thought.
As I said, don't take it the wrong way. You've said yourself that you've never been in winter - take this info from someone who has (2005, 2006 and 2007) |

Author : Welsh (167.83.9.---) posts : 78 Date : 02-06-08 12:09 Good point, I dont think ski school is needed EVERY day and given the lift pass for 6 days is only 20levs more than buying daily or if you buy two 3 day passes its ten levs given the weather may be poor on some days it might make sense to opt out some days.
When I say lunch for £0.80 I mean for Lunch even being a big boy I'd opt for a nice Shopska Salad - now summer prices for those ranged from 1.50levs now the exchange rate is around £1:2.50-2.70? even taking the lower amount that is a mere £0.60 of course you need a drink too but thats all I'd have for lunch and if I wanted more have two starters. I would have thought the places to eat on the slopes have a premium as they have no competition up there.
Evening meals I usually have just a starter and a main too stuffed to eat a desert so starter again usually no more than 2-3levs (evening) and main well sometimes I share a seche and thats only 18levs for 2 people so easily 10 levs per person add in say 8 beers @2.5levs so the total for me would be 30levs at the MAX for the evening then a few other beers maybe somewhere else but you dont need any more beers but even at that amount your spending (at the worst exchange rate) £12 evening and therefore maybe a total of £15 a day and not everyone will want big beer session EVERY night but even if they do assume a total of £105 for the week. With £30 for the taxi tfr dso £135 + ski lift |

Author : IMT (---.range86-144.btcentralplus.com) posts : 238 Date : 02-06-08 18:33 You're not going to find anything for 1.50lev on the mountain for lunch. It IS cheaper in town, no doubt, but not many, if any, people who are skiing/boarding will be eating lunch there.
Most people will be there for a week's holiday - by that I mean that they will (if the want a full ski pack) need lift pass and skis, boots and lessons for the 6 days. If you are a learner, then yes, lessons are important EVERY day. Please don't go changing the goal posts to try to make your figures fit. Of course 3 days will cost less - kind of obvious isn't it? |

Author : sam (---.nott.cable.ntl.com) posts : 4124 Date : 02-06-08 22:35 They will put the prices up in the winter, even two years ago we were spending £10 a day on lunch, that was for two of us with a drink, include a couple of drinks in th day and a beer at the end of the day it was around £30, in the evening we were spending around £40 to £50, three course meal and wine plus some drinks afterwards, lift passes were £100 each and we paid 150 euros for ski and boot hire, this year we have paid lift pass in advance and taking own skis, we still think we will need around £300 for lunch, evening meals and drinks. hope this helps. I wish you could get things at the prices in the summer, but not possible. |

Author : Joy Applebee (90.154.240.---) posts : 182 Date : 02-07-08 14:05 Hi Welsh,
I live in Bansko and believe me you cannot get a shopska salad for 1.50 leva in any of the menhanas I go to (paid 2.50 last night but normally 3.50) not even in the summer, maybe in some of the very small ones used by bulgarians only, but then the menu would be in bulgarian and most people would not be able to order anything!!!!!! Please tell me where you went
Nowadays most of the prices go up every oct/nov and do not go down again in the summer
When we came here 4 years ago 3 people could have lunch with a couple of beers each for 10 leva (in those days a beer was 0.70 leva) but these days would be minimum of 30 leva
On the mountain a beer is 5 leva a cappacino is 4 leva, 6 leva for a shopska, 5 leva for chips
Hope this helps
Joy

Author : Welsh (167.83.9.---) posts : 78 Date : 02-07-08 14:37 Well firstly in the Glazne area there is a big outdoor open resteraunt (with inside) near the bridge & river, then when you walk down from the 24hr bar on the right hand side there is a tiny resteraunt (yes no english menu) I have had Peasants Livers & chicken heats in there too very nice but my lady didnt like the sight of that sort of food but I love it.
Another place is right in the old town it has an outdoor BBQ with covered seating by clay tiles.
Um I think even in the square the two mehanas near MRI HQ have similar prices.
Summer in the Beer festival Kiminitza was for 500ml 0.8lev and very oddly the 250ml was 0.45lev (so I bought many of the smaller as its cheaper). When the Jazz festival came prices were a little different but the beer was tuborg so imported and therefore as expected higher but that was still only 1 lev - 1.5lev.
As I said earlier the most I paid for a beer in the hotel was 3lev or 3.5lev (cannot remember exactly as it was 4-5am so pretty drunk and didnt remember too much) but in the day that was the price.
Beer in the supermarket the big one is hardly any cheaper than in the mehanas or at least the ones we went to.
We even went to the 24hr bar to watch Wal v Eng rugby world cup warm up game and it rained heavy so we sat inside and I finished off all of their Pirin beer and that was 1.5-2lev max & I refused to buy the other brands of beer as they were more money.
Im not tight but I cannot see the point in buying non local produced food & drink and certainly no point in paying over the odds. |

Wait till you go in the winter Welsh, then come back. Your quoting all kinds of figures when you've never even been there in the ski season!
And yes, if 500ml costs 0.80lev and a 250 ml costs 0.45lev, you would be better off with the large ones. I assume your figures were a typo?
As an aside, if you want to stay in a catered chalet in Bankso, go to Joy's place - it's beautiful! |

I think I'll leave you guys to it - you clearly know more than - a) someone who has lived there for several years, and b) someone who has been (in the ski season) each year since 2005. (or maybe, just maybe, your just trolling!) I can't be bothered to argue - I know what I know, end of story! |

Author : Welsh (167.83.9.---) posts : 78 Date : 02-08-08 12:05 Yes thats the beer Pirinsko for some reason that is a bit cheaper than the others but it tastes fine to me (coming from an Ale background).
IMT - not trolling. However I will state that we have been to a many places where we cannot read the menus! Some have pics which help but generally if no pics we ask for a shopska starter then a Seche,Chicken Kebab etc etc. Some resteraunts they speak no English but thankfully Beer is Bira so Phew.
In Melnick food & drink in Aug07 was significantly cheaper than Bansko - I dont have the figs to recall but IIRC the meal for two of us there was HALF the price of the cheapest (and we always find a good cheap nice place in Bansko). Beer was certainly barely 0.5lev - not Pirinsko something regional I guess.
Anyway when we go we try lots of small little different places for evening meals we dont go for fancy looks & neon lights etc were happy with plain whitewashed walls open fire and to be honest all the other customers locals.
Also with the 500ml & 250ml yes typo. The 250ml was 0.35 lev.

Help!!!
What am i in for to hire skis, poles, boots?
What will a 9 day ski pass cost??
Realisically - what would one need in levs to survive comfortably for 10 dayss??
I am looking at staying in Knights Lodge Self catering apartment.... whats it like??
I see that you have a chalet. What would you charge for the above dates??
Do you suggest that I sort out ski equipment and passes when I get there - heard it works out a lot cheaper..
Many thanks

I would love to know where you can get a beer for 0.80 leva, i live in bulgaria and i could only get it at those prices from a wholesalers. I did find a place in Bansko that was 1 leva for pirinsko, but i think that price is hard to match let alone beat !!! |

I will say that at the moment 1.50lv is about average for a large beer, a shopska around 4lv, a simple meat dish around 6lv, just examples from touristy bars. My parents are here at the moment, and they cannot believe how cheap it is, 5 main courses, a couple of sweets, drinks and all for around 45 lv which relates to slightly less than £20.00, and all this in a bar in the square Even they commented that the drinks would have been nearly that at home.
I can get a 500cl bottle of Kaminitsa in the supermarket for .86 lv if thats any help
Its still good value here, shame no-one seems to be taking advantage of it (apart from my parents ) |

prices aren't released yet for 2010 season but new year is peak season... last year, you would have paid around £300 (using current exchange rates) for 9 days... |
