Bansko or Borovets

Which place is better for skiing, Bansko or Borovets? I'm not asking about the night life or fun, just about the ski slopes and infrastructure. Which one would you asses as better for skiers?

re: Bansko or Borovets

Blimey its only August and we already are about to open the annual can of worms.

Sorry Elena, its an old bone of contention on here which is best, suffice to say they both have their positives and their negatives.

Personally I can only comment fairly on Bansko, it has good slopes (by Bulgarian standards) and I think a quaint village centre, the lifts up the mountain are modern and fast, though the gondola can have queues at busy times.

The pistes have something for all, but may be limited for experts, though I am told the tree skiing and off piste is good ( I havent tried either yet, but may have a dabble on my next visit in Jan). I have been 6 times and am yet to get bored, I like the idea of doing the same slopes as I find it allows me to concentrate on practicing my technique with the knowledge of what is round the corner!. You didnt say what standard skiers you are, but there are suitable slopes for begginers and intermediates alike. I learnt to ski here 6 years ago and have found the pistes to be suitable for me to progress.

If you like good wholesome food bansko has plenty to offer in its mehanas (traditional restraunts) where you will get good food and wine at a fraction of what you would pay in the alps, the standard is however not really comparable.

Also I believe the snow is generally more reliable in Bansko but this is only from my own observations and I am willing to be corrected if wrong.

There are many new hotels and the town continues to take shape, becoming less of a building site on each of my visits.

Hope this helps, someone will no doubt be on the site very soon to sing the praises of Borovets.

re: Bansko or Borovets

The pistes in Bansko are better linked, there are fewer areas where you would have to push, the lifts are newer, and the extent of the snow cannon network is resort wide...
The only real consideration where Boro wins hands down is access. The skiing is accessed by one gondola in Bansko, it will shift 7500 people an hour but still can get very busy, and queuing for an hour or more is the norm, again at busy times (half term etc)
That said if you get up early you can normally beat the queues ...

As for standards of piste, Bansko has two good black runs, Tomba and Challin Valog, both of which with the right (wrong ??) conditions are a real test. The reds here also are of a good standard... As for the off-piste (and i do know hehehehe) is fantastic, but then again it is also in Boro, perhaps even better if a newbie to off-piste (real skiing ??)...
Two different resorts with different atmospheres, difficult to say which is best all round as everyone will have their favorite..
