It is still like a building site but more concentrated at the top of the town, things have definately improved, but its a long way off being finished...

Joe,

We went to Bansko for the first time this year. Place was a building site, with frozen mud roads topped off with solid ice (real skating rink). Initially not impressed! But we receive a large dump of snow two days in and the place changed completely, masked the town, totally new atmosphere and awesome ski conditions. Plus with no world cup next year they can concentrate fully on grooming all the run’s and not just the world cup one. We have booked to go back next year hoping for the same conditions, people are friendly; it is value for money and offers extremely good ski/snowboard conditions for all standards, once you are up the top. Only gripe I still have is the gondola, it is quick and efficient but due to volume of people using it, if you arrive after 08:30 be prepared to wait for up to 2 hours to get on it. Alternative is to pay and take a taxi/car up the mountain. Socially good, varied choice of restaurant and price range. So be prepared for a building site, but hope for snow not just to ski on!

Bansko will be host of the European Cup for men in slalom 22-23 January 2010. In 2011 26-27 February Bansko will host the World Cup for men Super G and Slalom. In 2012 25-26 February Bansko will host the World Cup for women Downhill and Super G.

So next year say goodbye to Tomba from the start of the season until the end of January, but at least that's better than 2011 and 2012 when it'll be closed right through the half term holidays.....

Have to admit snow does cover a multitude of sins. But the place is definately improving and hopefully will see an improvement next season also.

Simple really - West of the River is a building site - East not too bad except higher up beyond the Kempinski. In town you don't see any building going on at all.

With regards to Gondola queues depends when you go - we went mid/end of March - NO queues at all, and I mean no queues on any lift - In my experience late season tends to have better ski conditions as well - If queues are a problem to you, avoid World Cup events, Bulgarian Holidays and Half Term if poss.

Totally agree, really only four periods when it can get busy, but that is only between 09.00 and 11.00. Last season was not as busy as the previous bar maybe the world cup...
Hopefully 9A will be re-opened, this is a section off Tomba and was the normal venue for slalom, especially lower level. The FIS events will definately use Tomba for the exposure. Its unfortunately drawing a compromise between accomadating visitors and hosting world class events both of which benefit the area. Tomba is not so much of a challenge anyway, the black at Challin Valog is much better Cool

9A is closed because of the avalanche cutting into it. Also if they opened it they would lose a large part of the learner zone so I don't reckon it'll ever be opened. Chalin Valog is a much better run, but the lower altitude means it's out of use much more.
