Hi Candy Girl and Andie.

Yep, back but straight into reorganising kids and cricket AND cheering Man Utd Exclamation Very Happy

Weather wasn't the best I've had in BG - mainly rain and snow blizzard, which made it difficult to reach the orphanage.

Due to other committments, Amanda couldn't meet us but luckily friends took us. Never been to Pamporovo so enjoyed the scenery. The climb up the mountains is so different to Borovets, steeper and windier climb but very picturesque. It took us much longer than anticipated due to hitting the snow blizzard and not having snow tyres. The snow was at it's thickest in Pamps but not too bad further on in the village where the orphanage is, so we didn't arrive until about 6.30 pm.

We pulled into the orphanage and some children ran to meet us, whilst others hung back. I had a football in my hand and Amanda on the mobile ready to talk to the children to vouch for us. A lad called Jesus, who spoke English and had a lovely manner and great sense of humour, took charge. He sent a message for Jasmine (the Peace Core Worker) and explained to the children that I was a friend of Amanda and had bought things for them.

I was there with hubby and 2 Bulgarian men for 30 mins before two care workers decided to hang over the balcony to see what was happening. They didn't challenge us or speak to us, which I found very worrying as we could have driven off with children.

The children were delightful - excited, curious and friendly. Some smiled and watched from a distance, whilst others were keen to have a cuddle and find out more about us. It was great our friends were there, so language was not a problem. They were dressed in clothes that were obviously English donations and had warm clothing on in the very cold weather (2 C).

They told me about their football tournament and were very excited when I told them I had 3 footballs, football boots and shin pads for them. I let them have a ball straight away, so many of them rushed off to try it out.

I was very pleased that I had managed to get around 50 kgs of gear out to them but left it with Jasmine in her flat to sort through and decide, with Amanda, how to distribute it all.

Unfortunately, we did not get the opportunity to do the cricket coaching with them but Amanda's son plays so should be able to help them get the hang of it.

I was disappointed not to have been able to spend more time with them and meet them all but plan to go out with more things for them in a few weeks time and spend more time with them then. Andie should be out there then and will hopefully meet me there.

My overall impression was of a group of children starved for friendly adult interaction, some were understandably suspicious, whilst others just wanted cuddles and enjoyed a joke. They were obviously pleased with the attention and wanted to interact in any way they could. They could have just used our interpreters but seemed to get more pleasure trying to speak English or use sign/hand language.

I can't wait (sorry, Pete) to go back and spend more time with them Very Happy Very Happy

The wedding was brilliant too. I think Bulgarian weddings beat English ones hands down. They are full of tradition but are also less formal than ours - great fun. Just trying to talk other BG friends into getting married so we can attend more Exclamation Very Happy Very Happy

Spent a lot of time in Sofia and had some fabulous food at excellent prices. Also bought one day card for the trams/trolley buses and rode around the city, taking in the atmosphere. Sofia is not a place I want to particularly spend more time in as a tourist but enjoyed the experience. I much preferred travelling out to the country and villages. Maybe because I live in a built up area, I just need the space and fresh air Very Happy Very Happy

Hi Lesley,

I was hoping that you would post on here . I am at my son's in Kent helping out with my 3.5 weeks old grand daughter and they have gone to bed to try and catch some sleep so I thought I would log on to see if there was any news. So glad that you enjoyed your visit and it was Jesus who looked after us and he walked arm in arm with me down the road trying to chat in English - he seems such a bright lad. Sorry that you did not have more time to spend with them. I am going home tomorrow and we are off to Bg. on Wed. for 3 weeks. If you go out again I would love to meet up with you - you can email me for my Bg. phone no. ( do not have your email to hand )
I cannot believe the weather over there, hope it changes as it should be quite warm now.
Well, how did you like the Rhodopies - quite different from Borovets area?
Take care and thank you and your husband for doing all this for the children, I am sure they appreciated it. C x

Carole

I hope to go again in the next few weeks, so will try and arrange it for when you are out there. Andie should be there too.

Just need a few weeks to sort finances and collect more clothes, towels etc.

The Rhodopies are very different from Rila and I would like to explore more next time.

I've sent an email, so will wait for your BG mobile no.

L X
