Hi, I'm going to be a first timer this Christmas with my 12 yr old (apart from a shool trip a vvv long time ago...) and would really appreciate some tips on clothes & spends. Mayb seem a stupid question but is it jeans & jumpers under the ski gear? Is it a dress-up in the evenings kinda holiday? and can anybody give me an idea of cost on food & drinks?

Hi there,
Im in borovets for the season this year,
Food and drink is fairly reasonable in the resort.
Dont expect a beer for 30p and to eat for a pound as some holiday companies are saying but a beer will set you back 3.50 to 5 lev as a guide so between £1.50 and £2.50.
And you can eat just a basic meal like a pizza for around
ten lev so about £5.00
There is not really much dressing up to be done, jeans and jumpers etc are fine for going out at night there is not any posh restraunts that i can think of.
Clothes on the slope in the day i always wear themal top and bottom but its a personal prefernece, most people say layers are always good if you can carry a bag so you can put clothes on and off as you wish.
Dont get mislead by the lovely sun in the morning and the temp being fairly mild, mother nature can change her mind very quickly and you do not want to be caught out in a snow storm with not many warm clothes with you.

 hi we are coming to borovets for christmas 08 with our 3 and 5 year old, could you advice me on any activites that will be going on during christmas week that we could do with them! also do you have a santa you can visit?

Its definatly not a dressy up place and i'd say a good pair of boots for when your off the slopes is a must. The roads get so mushy with everyone trampling them and all the dung from the horses. I picked a cheep pair of hi-tech snow boots from tk max before i went and it definatly was the best £20 i spent!
The food is not great but they do have a couple of shops that you can get baisc food from if you have picky eaters in your group.

Hi Liz,
You don't have to dress-up (mayby in the 4star hotels - but the're not many of them ). The bigger hotels have reasonable / good food - to choose from ). Food and drinks are not expensive ( cheaper than in the Alp countries).
Take good / strong shoes ( or boots ) for the roads ( can get slippy).
For skiing / boarding are diff. layers the best. (warm) untherwear, shirt, sweater or fleece, wind/water proof ski jacket and pants.
- something for your head, good gloves, sunglasses en a snowgoggle.
Like this you'll be well prepaired for all conditions.
Have fun there. I'm there for christmas too. Let's hope for good snow.

we were there for christmas last year and it was fab. jeans and jumpers for evening fine and walking boots are a must. we all wore santa suits on christmas day as did most other people it seemed i have some great piccies taken at top of gondala of sooooo many people dressed up. you will have a fab time. Gala dinners are an experience you will never forget????!!!

hi Liz,
i have been for 3 of the last 4 years with my kids i can tell you it is soooo not a dressy place. Although my kids always want to dress up lol. Cheaper than France but not as cheap as it was. Samokov hotel has a bowling alley and pool tables and shooting gallery. There is also a couple of internet cafes so your young lady can keep in touch with her mates on msn, bebo ect. Nice swimming pool and massages in the Rila hotel and dont forget that she will make friends in ski school and not want to hang out with the oldens in the evenings lol. we have all worn undergarments of lycra or dmart stuff, but sometimes nowt but shorts as it can get quiet hot. Sometimes you just have to find out what suits you. Have a great time

Stayed at Malina Villas for xmas last year and had a great time, although kids struggled with the "Bush Tucker Gala dinner". Staying at the Samakov this year for New Year and my girls are wondering if its a dress up type affair in the night club for New Years Eve.
Me, toothbrush, wallet, sorted!!
Praying for the white stuff.

In What way is the gala dinner an EXPERIENCE!!!!!!! good or not so good?? As its christmas day do people dress up for the gala dinner or just wear jeans and top?

I'm confused as to what GALA dinner means also, can anyone shed some light please? Is it a dress up/make an effort type of affair or just ample food and come as you like. Am staying at the snejenka over the christmas week in 2008, can't wait.

Hi all. Stayed at Lion for Xmas 2 years ago, we had been warned meal might not be great but were pleasantly surprised. Tables were set out as "Guests from Crystal/Thomson" etc, set courses (not the usual buffet) and they were all quite good. Not a dress up affair, jeans were fine. All in all a good night!

Hi all,
Just wondering what the snow has been like over Christmas for those of you that have been before? I know there is no guarantee, but a friend of mine mentioned that the resort doesn't get any decent snow until after NY! Anyone staying in the Iglika Palace over Xmas?

Im in the resort all season Mel, normally stay in the iglika and its not a bad hotel, the superior rooms are very good the others a little cramp but fine for me.
Never stayed over at xmas but was there for last new year.
The new year Gala dinner ummmm well.
They went to a lot of effort lots of free drink on the table and plenty off it, some traditional bulgarian dancing and music.
We were lucky and got our food not to late, but it was as expected in bulgaria very relaxed and not organised. as we left for the midnight fireworks some people were just getting there food.
Loved the night food and drink was good and the after party even better.
Nothing to worry about.
