Booked a party of 15 for Pamporovo. Tour operator has just confirmed that £30 fuel surcharge will apply to each. Airlines have actually added on £72!!! If the locals in Bulgaria don't drop their prices for drinks etc I fear they will be killing of an already wounded animal...tourists. Anyone know what the situation in the resorts is going to be?

Like about 3 quid for a can of coke if you buy it at mid station - so don't !
Ski-ing is not a cheap activity, and Bulgaria are quickly becoming aware of what strain the marketplace can take in terms of pricing. The rules of supply and demand apply there just as anywhere else, and if they sense a falloff in demand for their goods such that it will harm their income, they will have to cut profit margins to maintain sales. If we tourists remain happy to pay 3 quid for a can of coke I am sure they will remain happy to sell it for that price. If we vote with our feet, they will adjust their prices to attract us back.
We will see what the winter brings. Already checking webcam 5 times daily for any flakes of the white stuff......

If you can't afford an extra 30 quid you really shouldn't be engaging in an expensive pass time such as skiing

all tour operators across the uk have the right to add a fuel charge, if they dont they will go bust and u could lose alot more.
the price of oil has gone up !!!! as well as the dollar dropping!!!!!
some tour operators are currently adding on £90 fuel charges.
i bet excel customers would have paid more to save their holidays

Fuel costs effect everyone, including those running businesses in BG. I would never condone £3.00 for a coke but accept that transport costs have risen considerably in BG, imported items are now a lot more expensive. Proportionally the basic living costs in BG have risen far more than those in the UK, ok, still cheap but no where near as cheap as a couple of years ago.
As more businesses establish in BG resorts, especially foriegn business, the competition increases. Those businesses slow to react in pricing will be left out in the cold. The old BG business ethic of making as much as you possibly can out of any product will be a thing of the past, forgetting that your market now may have options will cause quite a few to have a re-think, welcome to the EU guys

Mat, Maybe some people can't afford the extra £30! Bit harsh to say that they shouldn't be sking. For a family of 4 that's at least another £120 on their holiday.

Johnny, thats ridiculous, we are running a race camp in boro this year for our race club and its half the cost of similar thing in France, thats about 300 pounds per head!!!!! you can get a lot of cokes with that!, and weve been doing packages for 350 per head for a week flights half board transfers etc , these prices floor the rest of europe and are why people will still flock to BG....cause they can afford it>
( i know this post wont last long but im trying to make a point!!)

Fraser,
I see you are selling packages. Do you have a tour operating license in either the UK or Bulgaria?

Fraser
What's this race camp you're running? My lad is 13 and would love something like that! (so would I) He's a brilliant skier, started at 6 in Pamps/Boro. Email me all the details.
Cheers
Trevor

I think it's disgusting. Why don't they just display the price of the flight all in. insteading adding all the extras on? That way at least you know right from the start as soon as you open the brochure what you'll be paying. It's all a con to make us silly tourists think we are getting our flights cheap!

Indeed I do. This coming season France, Austria and probably Whistler again. But as I live an hour from Borovets, I can make do with that in the interim.

Boro in Jan and Bansko in March. Only commented on the spelling as it took a moment to work it out. My fingers aren't too good at typing either.
Would like to save the pennies to go further a field, but it's always such a good laugh to meet up with people form this board. One day....
