Flooding in Bansko 15th May!!

Ive just seen some of the news reports & pics of the disaster in Bansko.

So far Ive read that Bansko Royal Towers, The Guiness Development, Cedar lodge are all said to be effected & also that there is a suggestion that 10-11 other complexes have been damaged!!!

Does anyone know IF Lucky Bansko has had any damage.

Posting from a worried owner.

re: Flooding in Bansko 15th May!!

The combination of melting snow and torrential rain pushed the defenses to the limit, eventually breaching the river wall. The force of the water was enough to roll boulders down the river effectively damming it at a corner forcing the water over. The breach above the Bansko Royal Towers sent water and rubble cascading down the road, blowing the main drain causing the roads to rise and the top surface to be torn off. The breach above the Bansko Royal Towers sent water and rubble cascading down the road, blowing the main drain causing the roads to rise and the top surface to be torn off. The brunt of the damage was to properties near to the initial breach, BRT, Guiness, The Mall, but others sustained some flooding as far down as the bottom of town. Not heard of any water damage at Lucky Bansko. The clean up is in full swing. I have driven round the worst effected areas this morning and its looking a lot better. Roadworks have started and hopefully within a few weeks we will be back to normal. Ironically it has snowed on the mountain last night, enough to cover bare piste... just shows how fickle nature can be Wink
Its funny how the doomongers can pick up on things.. supposably this bit of flooding was down to de-forestation according to one reporter ??? According to the locals the Glazne has broke its banks since the beginning of time, the combination of snow melt and heavy rain being quite a common occurance. The disappointing thing is the relatively new defenses were breached, not so much by the volume of water, but by what the water bought with it....

re: Flooding in Bansko 15th May!!

I suppose the snow melt was probably accelerated by the very warm weather you had a little while ago, and of course the large late season snowfall had to go somewhere once it melted. Noticed the overnight dusting of snow on the webcams, still a fair depth on todorka.

re: Flooding in Bansko 15th May!!

Apparently Crystal apartments got it big time as this was where the river broke over the sides... there are some photos on talkbansko site if anyone is interested in looking.
