Jan 2013-Snow

Hi all,

It will be my first time out in bulgarira next year- we are looking at booking for the first full week in januaray fliying out on the 5th.

Was just wondering what the snow is likely to be like this time of year. Does bororvets historically get good snow fall around this time or is it likely to be a bit sketchy?

Cheers for any response

re: Jan 2013-Snow

Me and my wife Debs are heading out there for our first time ever snowboarding holiday on the 26th Jan 13. I have been looking at the weather for this time of year and it is pretty much good snow but better the later you leave it, I have been looking on YouTube with different dates that people have been and it looks good most of Jan/Feb.
If you look at the "The weather now" link in the left-hand column it will give you an idea, but dont worry to much as they have snow cannons for the days ...

You cannot say for sure that it will be dumping impossible. Next year could be terrible or ok or good or incredible.

What you need is low temps which would be at the lowest late Jan to mid to late Feb. With that there is a higher chance.

Bansko has all its pistes covered by Snow cannons so even if there isn't physical snow and that the temps are low enough they will run the cannons thus creating snow.

I have skiied in Bansko at Half term week when it dumped every night snowing in the village and many/most days snowing either in White out conditions to heavy snow to flurries to nothing. But every day was very grey and up the mountain SO SO cold.
Conversly have been skiing there last week of the season ie April up to the 10th. Good snow quiet pistes cheaper lift passes. But clear blue sky and in the village temps would reach mid 20's I kid you not. So that means mid afternoon lower slopes get a bit heavy.

The only place that is snow sure is a snow dome... that said Bansko with its concentration of cannons can virtually guarantee cover, but even this is reliant on low temps, and water Surprised this season when the cannons were run the mountain was virtually out of water due to the unusually dry summer and autumn, fortunately it snowed, and snowed, and snowed, and snowed etc etc etc...

Now it is clear skies, bluebird days, with good cover on all slopes, overnight freeze causing it to be a little hard in the early morning, but softening up as the day goes on. Yesterday the only slushy piste was to be found at the base of Challin Valog, and the lower part of the ski road, but even the ski road still has about half a metre of cover. More snow forecast for next week... getting a bit fed up of it really Mad gorgeous though sat on our balcony this morning in the sunshine Very Happy
Slopes are quieter now, queuing not an issue, in fact perfect spring skiing... come on Mikey, before it all disappears Razz
