Hi Julie,
Bit of a long read - but here you go.......

The prime ministers of Bulgaria and Greece, Boyko Borisov and Georgeos Papandreou, cut the ribbon on the new border checkpoint Zlatograd - Termes near the peak of Kostadin, 4 km. away from Zlatograd. It was done 12 years after the idea come to light. The opening of border there makes the distance between Zlatograd and Xanthi about 50 kilometers, and now Pamporovo will have an outlet to the Aegean Sea, as the distance between our mountain resort and the coast of Greece will be around 120 kilometers or 2 hours drive by car. Rite of health with water was made by the Plovdiv and Xanthi Metropolitan bishops Panteleimon and Nicholas.
Prime Minister of Greece said that this road represents that in an united Europe we break down everything from the past that has divided us and open new avenues for cooperation. Papandreou said that this year marks 130 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Greece. He pointed out that this is the fourth checkpoint of our common border after Promahonas - Kulata, Eksohi - Ilinden and Kapitan Petko Voivoda - Ormenion. The prime Minister of Greece added that soon another checkpoint - Kyprinos - Ivaylovgrad is supposed to be opened and all this shows that the roads we move on actually get us together.
Papandreou said, the newly opened border point will contribute to the development of Trade, Economy, and the purpose of the two nations is to develop also Tourism near the border areas, which will lead to increased welfare of the population in these regions.
On his part, the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov pointed out that at the first meeting in Brussels with his Greek counterpart Papandreou, although they are representatives of the two largest European parties, both have promised good cooperation and to work for the welfare and prosperity of the two neighboring nations.
Bulgarian Prime Minister added that both sides should join efforts in building infrastructure projects in support of tobacco growers in both border areas and assist, as Papandreou noted too, our neighboring countries to join the European Union.
This is info from a friend in Pamps area who has made the journey.
The road from here to border at Zlatograd is fine but the road down to Greece is a bit of a drive. Not only are there the proverbial bends but the first bit is single lane only. At the mo it is for cars only and it goes up the mountain as well as down in parts - seems strange but that's life. J tells me the road from Rudozhem will be wider and straighter as trucks, coaches etc will be allowed on that one. You ...

You can't really lose your way as it is clearly signposted - we entered just above Xanthi. We then drove through Xanthi about 20 mins south to this beautiful unspoilt beach at Mandra (I think!). It was a lovely warm sunny day ..... Andie
