Today I was told (and the source is very reliable by the way) that Easyjet, Ryanair and Wizz Air will fly into the new Plovdiv Airport.
At long last it looks as tho Pamporovo and surrounding areas (including Momchilovtsi lol) will be accessible without a 3-4 hour journey. Also, the first flights into Plovdiv are expected to start early July.

The airport will be delayed won't it Andie due to the nesting birds! They cant complete the roof until they migrate in a few months. However they do plan to open though in July ahead of schedule still ?????????????? |

Hi Arron, it is supposedly 2 months ahead of schedule. So if it is now delayed it may well be completed on time if you get my drift lol. A typical BG timetable eh!

Can't see Wizz, Ryan and Easyjet all doing Plovdiv surely not enough demand?
To be honest I would be suprised if any of them took it on. The peak demand is only in winter and then only for 6wks if lucky, it's not exactly a route you would expect to be busy in the summer is it?  |

A lot of it will be down to Bulgaria now being in the European Union and the freedom of travel that has opened up in Bulgaria. I think it could prove busy if marketed right, after all Plovdiv is the second biggest City in Bulgaria with 10% of the countries population living in and around the City.

Plovdiv is more central and will not only be used as an optional airport for the Black Sea coast passengers during the summer months but all year round by many expats, property owners and others living in and visiting the surrounding towns/villages - not just holiday makers.
As for the ski season I believe the transfer time from Plovdiv to Pamporovo and Borovets is roughly the same and just a bit further for Bansko. Don't the tour/package operators already use Plovdiv for the ski resorts during the winter season?
As for which airlines will fly into Plovdiv I can only repeat what I was told.

My reliable source, coomon sense, tells me they will not be using Plovdiv any time soon! |

Done the plovdiv (Assenovgrad)to Bansko route a few years back myself took no more than two hrs in a taxi, this wasn't a crazy driver either 
And about 3.5 hrs to the coast |

No - it is not and I can't remember any claim being made that Pamporovo will be a 6 month a year ski resort. Apart from the fact that it was mentioned that Perelik has snow in May - as it did this year. |

I don't think they do Philip. Wizz, Easy and Ryan all seem to have routes they fly to every week to my knowledge I may be wrong.
I think you are confusing them with charter flights which is a different thing altogehter. I don't doubt 1 of them may well look at it but I would be suprised if the demand is there for all 3 of them and possibly charter flights. |

Just to correct you Daniel. Easijet only fly to Ibiza in the Summer months up until Sept 13th. I'm sure there are other examples like this. |

I think you will find that the airlines are flexible with their route planning. in summer they fly to summer destinations and winter to winter destinations. This def happens with easyjet and ryanair.I am not confusing it with charters |

Just to reconfirm, none of the low cost carriers will fly to Plovdiv. They will not introduce risky new routes, and this would be very risky, in the current climate.
The only resort this would benefit is Pamporovo, and that has fallen out of favour over the last few years, due to the terrible infastructure and poor snow.
The low costs airline will serve only Sofia in the winter, and there is no way Sofia Airport will let one of their low cost carrier partners expand to Plovdiv, they will offer far more attractive conditions!!

Ryan air are a distince possibility, landing fees would be a lot cheaper and they dont go to Sofia, and they do specialise in alternative airports!! I disagree about Pamps being the only destination, i think youll find that price will dceide that, if it costs a lot less to fly to Plovdiv people will also use it for Boro and Bansko. |

Hi all,
I am a regular traveler to Plovdiv-lovely city and a pain in the arse to get too. (From Devon)
I was told ryan air would be flying there years ago.(by an agent!) Snowy Norms right though- The fact is lowcost carriers are struggeling at the moment and if anything trimming destinations not adding new ones. but I hope I'm wrong,
