Early Thursday morning last week those of us who live in Sofia were treated to a huge series of explosions echoing across the city. Half awake I presumed it was thunder or maybe the builders next door getting an early start, as the morning wore on a story emerged of a huge cold war era ammo dump close to Sofia Airport catching fire and providing an all day fire works display.
The airport itself suffered collatoral damage and was closed all day, leading the more cynical of us to delcare that only the bloody bulgarians were capable of blowing up their own international airport.
The fire will it appears burn for weeks (the same happened in Albania last week) although the airport is now open again and the bangs have slowed down to a 'sparodic rate'. The politicians are tripping over themselves to blame each other and two main threories are emerging - us world-weary Bulgarian observers are putting it down to mediocre safety standards being bdly enforced, conspiracy theorists say that the fire was lit deliberately to cover up for the systematic thefts from the store over the years....

I was in Borovets at the time, and thought something had gone supersonic overhead, bear in mind we are some 40 miles away (no mikey i havent got a tape measure, its a rough figure ) the whole chalet shook, and it was still chucking out loads of smoke at the weekend when i went to the airport........i mean it could never happen here something like that....  (oops it did didnt it when that oil storage near Heathrow went up! i know we almost got diverted)
