Hi Kaite
We were in Borovets last year and are going again in 3 weeks. Our tour rep rang the ski hire place and asked them directly last year. They only had helmets for children and none for adults. We bought our own in UK and brought them with us. Lots of people said we were mad, as skiers don't wear helmets in the European resorts (hence the lack of helmets in the hire shops). Assuming you will be using Borosports for your equipment (which hotel are you staying in and are you going with a tour operator?) then yes they do have them. You will have to pay extra as they will not be part of your package. If the kids are young and are in the kids ski school then they will be wearing helmets by default.
I hired two for my teenagers last season but my little one had one as part of the school equipment package.

Still got kids helmets in local Aldi and Lidl shops, probably not much more than hire at around £20ish and at least you can be sure they haven't taken a hard bash and while looking fine are actually useless!
I'd never trust a used or hire helmet myself for anything as they are designed to absorb impact through partial destruction and that partial destruction isn't always visible.
Noticed kids with Borosports NOT wearing helmets this year- (by default)- probably have to pay extra and what condition they are in is any ones guess (their skis tend to be poor!)- best buy your own before going if possible, to ensure they fit and are comfy etc!
Oh and don't worry about looking daft by wearing a helmet yourself Katie! Didn't take me long to figure out that I'm far more likely to bash my head skiing than doing things I wouldn't dream of doing without a helmet like horse riding.

It was also noticeable that on my trip with the snowheads.com crowd last year (me one of the least experienced on the trip, most of the 90 or so on that holiday were the type of skier who thinks a black is a good first run of the day to warm up for the even steeper off piste they are planning for later!) pretty much all of us (think only 4 or 5 exceptions) wore helmets.
If the kids object to helmet wearing due to uncoolness there are all sorts of cool stick on ears, mohican crests, shark fins etc that can be got for very little cash in the ski shops. On our last trip an outbreak of such decorations had several kids who really hated helmets nagging the parents to buy them a helmet to attach their favourite stick on decoration to!
Ok have just got back from Borovets and if your kids are in Kinder they get helmets, if they are in skischool you have to pay extra...We took helmets with us but i know people were hiring them and it worked out at 58lev for the week...cheaper to buy them in the uk...plus you know that they haven't been dropped and only your kids heads have been in them....
