Vegetarian / Vegan Food in Borovets

I'm vegetarian and slightly worried about what the food's going to be like for me in Borovets. To make matters worse, I can't have any milk products either so apart from eggs, it's almost a vegan diet! Is anyone able to recommend anywhere that may be good for me to eat?

Hi Ruth,

The bulgarians eat a lot of meat but all the restauarants will cook whatever you ask even if it's not on the menu. Most of the waiters / waitresses speak english, so you just need to explain and you should be fine!

Thank you for the swift response, that's put my mind at rest. Bulgarian is not going to be my strong point as it's my first visit!

Also, if you happen to go into a restauarant wehre they don't understand, just go to another one - we all have our favourites, but lots of them are very good!

Seems it could be omelettes all week then....
Nah, don't have to be Very Happy Some great vegetable dishes, and even variants on eggs, mish mash is nice
Razz
Be aware that some restaurants will cook with animal fat (lard) and not oil, lovely but not quite veggie.....

Hi Ruth,

Copy this down and show it to someone if they don't understand you...

sas slanchogledovo olio ili s jivotinska maznina e gotveneto mola
(Is it cooked with sunflower oil or animal fat, please?)

Bobby thinks that the majority of all Boro restaurants now use vegetable oil now rather than animal fat, but just in case...!

Thanks for that, Kas. I will definitely take it with me. There's nothing more awkward than being served a meal I just can't eat so that's much appreciated.

Hi Ruth,
We ski regularly with a Vegan in Bulgaria and I have to say it's not easy. The big problem is getting people to understand that being a Vegan is totally different than being a Vegetarian. She takes a lot of Vegan stuff with her such as Vegan sausages and biscuits etc. - which is perfectly OK with customs as it is not meat. Most of the restaurants are happy to cook her food for her although some do charge for this which I think is quite understandable.

I wish you luck but would ...
