Bansko

Just wanted a balanced view on current conditions in Bansko to get an idea of what they may be like next week.

we are flying into Sofia on the 18/2 and had planned to go to Borovets where we have an apartment and have stored all of our ski gear.

i am considering changing our flights to get to somewhere in the alps, or hiring a car and aiming for Bansko, depending on the skiing prospects there.

re: Bansko

they are expecting a fresh load of snow thursday which should freshen things up a bit and most the runs are now open in bansko. I think Bansko skiing conditions should be pretty good, If the temp drops most of the resort will be topped up with the cannons so should be fine.

re: Bansko

Cheers Adam,

i am also still holding out for Borovets. Lol. There is still time before we fly out for the weather to change.

having said that, so long as I will be able to get from Sofia to somewhere with snow i will be happy.

re: Bansko

just looked at the BG weather for the week ahead and the prospect for this week is NOT good.
Thursday a bit of rain with Temps around 5-10C and then onwards getting warmer for the weekend and beyond.
Further than than nobody knows.
But the situation with the upper slopes in BG resorts is so bad that 10-20cm even if it falls that much won't do anything to cover the ground/grass and soil let alone making it skiable.Borovets will need 50 plus CMs to make any change. This late into the season ...

Ironically @ the other side of Europe is solid ,good, and continuing with more and more (probably not the Epic season of 12/13 but getting pretty close to that.
Prices are very good too so the choice is HUGE even for the approaching winter holidays weeks.Probably not for this forum but only trying to help those who want to ski on snow and plenty of it rather than having plan Bs with drinking holes or some meaningless trips around the place trying to find white stuff or dream about it.
Let's face it:
Do you want to miss one season with the hope for better one next year.
I'd rather have it now and next and next after.

re: Bansko

-knowing Pamporovo very well I can state that during the current week ahead with the temp reaching double figures across the land the runs being the lowest there is a huge risk of Pamporovo reaching a warning state.
constant above zero temp for the next 10 days are killer.
Maybe then will be possible to ski only from Studenets upward or like usually at the very end of season.

I always demand when I am in a ski resort to be surrounded with the white stuff in the resort rather than travel up of search of it .
As for Bansko being with around around 10 degrees C in town you are as far removed from the winter feel as possible.
Borovets looks very undesirable when there is no snow in the resort (dusty, brown ,with horrible little shacks around the center toppled by the annoying bar touths).
Why they don't remove them and make it illegal to annoy- I don't know ?
This is the Bulgarian disease in need of Urgent Surgical Extermination .

re: Bansko

A lot of what you said is correct Colin some is incorrect. In particular

""This late into the season -heavy snowfalls is pretty unheard so the season looks BAD.""

It's the 11th of Feb for goodness sake.

You remind me of someone who used to post a lot on this site.

We can have snowfall here in BG into April. remember last year when nearly a meter fell after they closed resort???

I remember march's with 1-2metres of snow fall. Feb world cup nearly cancelled as too much snow fell few days before.

I know many march's where we have have had many big dumps of snow...... how do i know??? I live here and have to dig out the vans every day for transport.

It is a very strange season but you never know it may all come at once towards the end of it or within a week. Weather in the mountains is very unpredictable and forecasts are not always right. Its says 17degrees in town...... yes but on the mountain its freezing or near freezing and cannons are running.

There is only 1 piste closed in Bansko and that is Chalin Valog black every other run is open. It is more like mid march skiing at the minute but hopefully a few dumps soon will give us our winter. The top was closed the other day not because of no snow but because of very high dangerous winds they are all open again since then.
