france at new year 2008

just wondering if anyone's been to les houches or val-thornes over new year.
trying to get an idea of average snow fall(i know this is a million dollar question).
all the archives i can find aren't really giving much away.
we've never been so early in the season before and are a bit nervous about booking
also anybody know any good accomodation we have 2 possibilities lined up but it is nice to be recommended
cheers guys

Val thoren has a gacier so has all year skiing so should be a problem high up.

Was in the three vallees a couple of years back @ xmas and the snow was ok. Patchy in parts but as i mentioned above VT is higher so should have better coverage Very Happy

re: france at new year 2008

wait for a late deal if you are that worried, can see what the snow is like before you book.

Arron, Although there is a glacier in VT, they do not ski year round. Shuts around the beginning of May and opens again in November.
VT is a snowsure resort. Snow at christmas is fine weather it be man made or natural.

re: france at new year 2008

if you are going to book early i wud have to say val thorens.les houches's highest lift is lower than the resort altitude of VT and this could play a part in the snow. val thorens being so high is 'snow-sure'. well if it doesnt snow, because it is so high they can use snow-cannons nearly 24/7+they have alot of snow-cannons
