Hi all,
David 'ere.
I feel a bit wrong registering just to ask a qtn but this seems like the place for the answers.
We are looking to ski in BG this year. We are probably a party of 4 to 6 lads (25-46 yrs) with mixed ability from total beginner to borderline good inter/advanced.
After searching on here and various other forums I think Boro seem like the best place to go for us but wondered on a few things.
Are there any hotels which the locals would warn away from?

Are there any hotels which the locals would warn away from?
reading on trip advisor there seem to be some to avoid but it's difficult to tell if people are just whinging or there really is a problem.
How does the weather go? How much snow in mid January?
There seems to be a lot of talk of "canons" on this forum, I've skied for 10 years in the French/Swiss alps, pyrenees, Canada and can honestly say I've only seen about 2 snow cannons working and strangely there was plenty of snow at the time?
Also for the beginners, what is the hire gear like, ok?
Whats the average price for a pint ATM, searching the web I can be reading prices on a web page then realise it's from 2006!
Can you guys comment on how BG compares to the other places above (understanding that it's a lot less expensive and you get what you pay for)
I guess my main concerns are temperature and snowfall.
Also what is BG like for thievery? I'm concerned I might get back to my room to find my gear gone.
I understand I could have raked though a bit more to find some of the answers I seek but my head is truly spinning to the point of being demented and I JUST WANNA NOOOOOO!
Hi Dode
For a group your age I would agree on Boro.If you want to be in the centre of things hotels like Ella,Moura ,Iglika,Rila,Samokov,Ice Angels are all OK as they are central but vary on price.
As to the skiing a true ski hound will run out of snow compared to some of the places you mention but if you are going with a mixed group it is a good place to go.

Have skiid canada for the last three years as well as bulgaria but still enjoy my time in boro because of the rest of the activities.
Ref conditions over the past few years the later in Jan you can go the better.
If you do go look up Kas & Bobby at either the white house up top or bobbys bar at the bottom and keep your eye on here for the snow reports and the forum meets. Kas/Bobby also do a night run down the mountain conditions permitting which is excellent fun.
We are out on the 28th Jan so if you are out then give us a shout and have a beer with me and SP not that we drink much.
Been going there for 10 years now and have enjoyed every year but if you want a pure skiing experience you may need to lower your expectations as against places like Canada.
Having said that last year in canada we struggled to ski for 3 days because it was -42 on the mountain.

I mirror what dbut says and like him have been going for the past 9 years. You are going to have a good time in Boro that is for sure.
Sounds like you have some beginners in your group so assuming that they wake up in the morning, it is a good place to learn.
When I used to go there with my mates we used to go 3rd week in Jan and for the most had good snow and temperatutres as low as -30. I'm putting last year down as a freak.

I've never had anything nicked but you wouldn't leave a £500 camera on your bed if you were going to Spain would so BG is no different. Most places have safe deposit boxes for hire and I would suggest you use one.
As far as price for a pint goes, if you drink the local perfectly acceptable brew, in a lot of places you get two for the price of one, don't worry about the price.
Something I meant to ask but forgot in the head spin was, If I left it till the weekend before we were due to go (to assess the snow conditions) to book a last minute thing, is it likely that there would be any availability?
Seem like a cool li'l community here,
Will defo look up some of you if it happens!
Cheers D
You might get a late deal down at the Lion or the Bor but its a bit of a slippery trek after a few drinkies! The main issue with skiing in Boro is that the nightlife is far too much fun and makes it very hard to hit the slopes early in the morning
We 've been going to Boro for 10 years too and will be there 28th Jan, so looking forward to meeting some new faces and catching up with some old ones
Enjoy it - and book early with BA much better flight times and barely different in price v th budget airlines when all is taken into consideration.
Food wise - if your a veggie you will love it (honestly there is so much good choice, so many different starters which would fit the bill), if your into meat well you will love it some more but do try some of the more unusual foods.

Booze - it is vastly cheaper than the uk. Frakly in Bansko in the most pricy places I could find ie up the mountain it would be £2 a 500ml whereas in the village most sell a beer for £1 and the older more traditional places will be £0.50 a beer.
Yes basically what certain countries used to be like in the med before the Euro came in and suddenly it was indifferent to the UK prices (yet they earnt the same .... go figure oh yea thats why their country is bankrupt.
