I posted this about 4 weeks ago:

The ones we all use are PMR446 (personal mobile radio 446Mhz), they are 500Mw (half a watt), and have a range of about 3Km. Here's some blurb I've copied from an ebay advert Please be careful when buying Walkie Talkies for UK use on eBay. The ones we all use are PMR446 (personal mobile radio 446Mhz), they are 500Mw (half a watt), and have a range of about 3Km. Here's some blurb I've copied from an ebay advert Please be careful when buying Walkie Talkies for UK use on eBay. There are other sellers, mainly from overseas, who are selling radios that are manufactured for use in other countries (particularly the USA). These radios transmit on frequencies that are illegal to use without a license in the UK. They may be able to transmit over greater distances, but these frequencies are reserved for licensed users in the UK - such as Business, Security, Search and Rescue, etc. We have yet to see this pointed out in the item description and we believe that many people are just unaware of the legalities and wider issues involved. This is why we include this warning here in our ad for UK legally unlicensed PMR's - at least you can now make an informed decision. If you see FRS/GMRS frequencies quoted, then beware. Also ask the Seller if the Ad does not state PMR446. If you receive no reply (or an evasive one), then beware. For more details, please email us and we will supply you with a link to the UK Telecommunications Regulator (Ofcom) website. If you are not a licensed user, then please check that the Walkie Talkies you buy use the PMR446 frequency. All of the Walkie Talkies that we sell are fully UK legal - they use the PMR446 frequency. This frequency can be used legally without a license in the UK, and most of Europe - but not in the USA. PMR446 can be used in the following countries (and many others - please email if you want us to run a check for you) :- UK Austria Bulgaria France Germany Italy Switzerland Hope this makes things clearer.
