Last New Year I stayed in a small private hotel and spoke to the owner who told me that it is a Bulgarian tradition for the local children to tap people on the back with a tinsel covered stick, when they do the tradition is to give them some change or small notes.
There were a handful of kids doing this in Borovets last year but it was quite embarrassing to watch all the British shoeing them away because they thought they were beggars!!!!!

spent new year in borovets in04/05 and 05/06,certainly a lively place in front of the rila,fireworks everywhere and the occasional gun being fired in the air,once seen never forgotten but all very enjoyable....
