Advice For First Timers

Every year we try and advise people who have never been to Bulgaria before what not to do and what not to expect in this country in order to make the most of your holiday. please heed this advice.

NEVER change money with strangers. No matter what rate of exchange they offer you. Every country has it's bad guys and Bulgaria is no different. People offering to exchange money with you are 99% of the time con men who will give you old and worthless money in exchange. Just don't be caught out. ...

NEVER change money with strangers. No matter what rate of exchange they offer you. Every country has it's bad guys and Bulgaria is no different. People offering to exchange money with you are 99% of the time con men who will give you old and worthless money in exchange. Just don't be caught out. If you are stopped and asked just say a polite no thank-you and walk away. The only real safe places to exchange your money is at your hotel reception, or with the main banks, or with the Crown Exchange booths. Most other booths will also rip you off so just ignore the rates they offer as this is also a con. The security guard outside is there to protect the cashier - not you. The rates offered on the billboards are only valid if you exchange a very large amount of money, exchange a moderate amount and you will get a very low rate.

Cash points are fine and will offer a decent rate and also accept most major cards. They will be found in the reception areas of most large hotels and also in the main town centres.

Bulgarian people are really friendly people - but as I said every country has it's bad guys so just be aware.
