Hubby has been offered some Atomic Beta x9.20 carver skis 180 cm, bindings and poles ,hardly been used. Although I have googled for advice about ski buying I can not find much about these type of skis. Would appreciate any advice - hubby ( Wiggy from the 2nd invasion, friend of the Fleeties) is 180cm tall & 85kg and a solid intermediate. thanks Tania ( aka Mrs Wiggy)
Wiggy ??? 85 kg ? is this the guy I sat by on the outward bound plane ? The one I had to prize out of his seat ?? Hiya Mrs Wiggy
Skis 180 cm possibly a touch to long,
but checkout the price of new and if a bargin his weight should hold them to the snow
Try ringing or calling in to a ski shop for some free advice. I have it in my head that with carvers you can ski longer skis than you would normally. Also - anything on the Atomic website?
Hi Tania, Jon's skis are 170 and he wished he'd bought slightly shorter, but that is only personal preference, as SP says 180s might be a tad too long. There should be some end of season bargains to be had so he might want to shop around a bit more before committing.
Hope all is well with you both x
Yes Richard it is that Guy!!!! - you and Nadine ( thanks Nade) have confirmed what we were thinking - too long - as the skis he had at the Samokov were just up to his chin (ish) so we reckon around 170 ish maybe a bit shorter. Appreciate you all replying - ta very much . Also thanks Danny. On a positive note we are booked for next year with the Fleeties - all flying from Gatwick on Feb 22nd staying at the Samokov again can't wait xx

re:Advice on buying Skis
Hi Tanya,
Think we met at 2nd invasion, but we went home on Monday!!
We bought skis on our Jan trip this year in Boro, Bobby advised us that modern carving skis can be shorter then they used to be, I have 160's ( and am about same size as Wiggy) We went to Stefan in the shop under the Samakov and he sorted us out no problem, so much so that Andrea our daughter, who you may have met, bought some 150,s on the advice of Bobby.
I'd have to agree on the above. He may find it tough to to get on edge with his weight, ability and ski length. I'd be looking at something in the 160-170 range. Should be bargains to be had soon as the season nears its end.
its partially a matter of personal preference. Im 178cm and ski on 165 Rossignol radical slalom skis, basically with the new carvers take 15cm of your height and thats about the correct length. 180s are too long, and those Atomics are a few years old as well if im not mistaken. As mentioned some cracking deals around as the season ends, dont feel restricted to the uk, we get a lot of our club stuff through from Germany, although most of the skis we get are Rossignol due to our sponsorship.
Why not get them long, file the ends into points and go hunting for those pesky snowboarders !
Fraser's right, get on the net and you'll find some great deals
Tania, all good advice above.
I have just tested some skis via the Snow and rock shop at Hemel Snow centre, Rissignol Pursuit 16 Ti, and Volkl RTM 80, it costs £15 for as long as you want to try up to 2 pairs and this can be used against any future purchase. These 2 skis are now 50% off making them just over £250 brand new. They are fairly different skis but are aimed at solid intermediates and both have good reviews, the Rossis were so easy to turn, they really do feel like they will be ...

They are fairly different skis but are aimed at solid intermediates and both have good reviews, the Rossis were so easy to turn, they really do feel like they will be great on steeper pistes needing a tighter turn, you can get really tight turns at speed, and big sweeping turns feel very stable (obviously limited by the slope indoors), but the reviews state they are very stable at speed. The RTM80s were a little different, they are a little wider underfoot and felt like they needed a little more effort to turn initially compared to the rossis, but after a while this seemed to change as my technique adapted to them and they became easier to turn, I would say the RTMs are aimed at fast skiers as they felt so solid and may be somewhat better off piste than the rossis, but difficult to asses in an indoor snow centre. I already have a set of Elan magfires which are great for really heavy snow and crud and are aimed at off piste, I therefore decided on the Rossis as I want to develop my technique on piste on steeper terrain and moguls.
The price reductions have just come in (they were 20% off a few days ago) and stocks of the rossis are low in many sizes, I think there are more of the RTMs available.
I hope this is some help to you, and no I dont work for them and am not on commision.
Re size, I opted for 165cm they were the size of the test ski and felt good and are also within the reccomended range for my ability and size.
Good luch with your search and I hope you find something suitable out there.
Regards
Don.
