Bulgarian Police are stepping up action in an attempt to prevent deaths from drunk drivers, mainly in the Sofia area.
They are now stopping people who are leaving pubs intent on driving home, and breathalising them BEFORE they get into their cars. Those who fail are not arrested, just told that they cannot drive, thus preventing accidents rather than responding to them. Lives are saved, licenses are kept, and many people are actually asking the Police to test them before they drive ...

Forget human rights side of it, I for one think this is an excellent idea.

And to think some people still say Bulgaria is "Third World" !

great idea, why cant they think of something like that here, they did have breath testers in pubs here at 1 time but that inevitably led to several drinking games which was fun but not very effective at saving lives.

We were in one of the elecrical stores (Comet or Currys) and they were selling self do breathilisers for £10.Not sure myself if that is a good idea as it would perhaps encourage some people to drink to the limit but at least people would know that they are still "safe".
I personally don't drink at all if I'm driving - one sniff and I'm legless, so all in all think that is best!!

Ellie,No, absolutely valueless. The only type of breathalyser that's any use is identical to those used by the police, and properly calibrated by the manufacturer from time to time.
Any less than this will lead you astray, be misleading and dangerous.
If in doubt don't drive, and better not to drink and drive at all.
