Anyone skied in Slovenia?

Just wonder what it is like in comparison to Bulgaria.

Always been to Borovets.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks Razz

re: Anyone skied in Slovenia?

Try Kranjska Gora - it is a well-established resort, certainly better than Bulgaria. No rip offs there.

Its atmosphere is not much different from that in Austria but you can ski straight to your hotel, so you will not have to haggle with nasty taxi drivers. Being next to the Austrian and Italian borders, the locals are much more sophisticated than Bulgarians.

I do not think you will come across that many Brits but many Slovenians will certainly speak English.

Fan of Bulgaria are you Mall Confused You seem to have nothing complimentary to say about it at all - when the question was about Slovenia, not Bulgaria. Mad

Yep, skied in Kranska Gora in 2004, stayed in a reported 5* backing onto the nursury slopes. The whole of the hotel lower ground was given over to a casino which stayed open 24 hours. Reasonable accomadation and good service (though tipping became a pain). You were issued a wrist band that was scanned every time you bought a drink or ordered food, also the facilities. This in principle is a good idea, but does run away with you especially after a few drinks at the bar. It was quite a shock ...

This in principle is a good idea, but does run away with you especially after a few drinks at the bar. It was quite a shock when i settled up at the end of the week. (over £600 Surprised) but that was for two.
The town is very traditional and friendly, not a lot of bars but those that are there seem ok, checked out the little bars just off the slopes, these tend to be frequented by instructors and the like, and in my experience seem the only ones with true skiing atmosphere. The skiing perhaps was the biggest disappointment, poor connection between the nursury area and the rest of the mountain, bottleneck both on the way out in the morning and back in the afternoon. The possibility of being stranded out of resort if to late for the last lift (happened to me twice), expensive taxi ride back to resort, only 3 km but still around £15.00 for two. The taxis lined up i noted so quite common.
The slopes are quite challanging though the FIS run was closed when i was there, there is also night skiing (extra to your day pass). There are opportunities to ski in Austria or Italy on day passes and many trips are organised from hotels. I found the prices to be reasonable though not as cheap as BG (especially in 2004), there was not a lot to do in the evenings, there is an icerink (or was ??), quite large numbers of Scandanavians, good fun, but quite drunk, close to a national park and lake (simply stunning)....
Would i go back, maybe if the access problem has improved but my connections tell me it has got more expensive so maybe not...

I went to Kranskja Gora and Vogel in February this year. KG was quite expensive and seemed a bit cheesey...kind of like a snowy Blackpool. Vogel was incredible...and a bit cheaper.

Maz & Sam - try doing a forum search on 'slovenia', someone posted a similar question last week, to which myself and I think one or two others replied. Helen

re: Anyone skied in Slovenia?

Skiing in Slovenia is a fantastic experience ; even Karvavetz, the ski resort atop of Lijlibiana is great because of the atmosphere - people are very friendly and there are often big parties.
The slopes in Slovenia are not very steep ,it is like mid mountain but usually they have big drops of snow and is perfect for beginners or middle level skiers.
Because of the proximity of Italy and Austria where most locals go for big ski , almost all Slovenians I know are to skiers and snowboarders ...

I also recommend the night ski near the capital

re: Anyone skied in Slovenia?

Visited Kranskja Gora first time this year 03/01/09 party of 20 all staying in hotel Lec. i have previously been to pamps for last 3 years. KG bigger resort infrastructure is superior: cleaner, better footpaths, cleaner toilets and no paying for them. Food was excellent, instruction much same as pamps. as most hotels are situated close to slope no taxi's are required so no being ripped off. Slopes are pretty short but well groomed and queues were small. maybe lacks some off the original ...
