I myself, after having hung around this site for the past month, will be taking £50 worth of Levs with me for emergencies and loads of ££££££££'s as they get a better exchange rate....or so I've been told!
hope this helps....
It's my first time in Bulgaria on Feb7th and this site has provided me with loads of great advice.....try using the search at the top of the messages as someone will have, probably, asked the question before and had an answer from the board...
Hope you have a great time in Bulgaria.
Pounds Sterling is definitely the better thing to get your hands on though i don't know exactly how it would work out for you if you transferring from dollars to pounds and then to Levs, i don't know how many pounds you'd get for you dollars so it may make little or no difference at all, all i know is that it's a good exchange rate for sterling. I personally don't get it from the hotels, i have my own source in Pamporovo to change it at a better rate for me.
