Just curious, I'm pretty new to skiing and winter sports... I noticed a high risk status on Bansko Ski yesterday and this prompted my question.
When sites refer to the avalanche status, are they referring to the risk of off piste skiers getting caught in an avalanche? Or does this risk apply to skiers on piste also?
Grey - this could mean all that you refer too and more. Avalanche areas are usually clearly marked. Some will run with the piste or across the piste. Others will run over 'off piste' areas. Some will interfere with all ski areas - depending were you ski!
Not sure on the avalanche risk sites in Bansko though.
There was a snowboard instructor killed in Bansko in late Jan whilst off piste, due to an avalanche, it took over a day to find him several metres down. If the risk is high, stay on piste!
