Has anyone been to Bansko recently and witnessed an avalanche or been caught in one? According to this site there is currently a high avalanche danger on the slopes.
Aren't the lifts closed while this is the danger? What actually causes an avalanche?
There has been a risk of avalanche on and off over the past few weeks due to the massive falls of snow.
A couple of weeks ago the slopes were closed on a Weds and a Friday due to high winds affecting the gondola and also the risk of avalanche.
When I was there this time last year there was a great risk of avalanche in some areas so the lifts were closed and, for example, the kindergarten was moved to higher up the mountain.
As to cause - different things - mainly the heavy snowfall ...
