re: Back from Bansko last night

We were staying in this area at the Hotel Guiness. Area is fine, right by the Gondola so a great location for those who are skiing but so many apartments going up, I do worry for the future when the slopes just won't be able to cope. Its only about a 10 minute walk to the old town - tons of restaurants, a few small supermarkets and tourist shops. I expect during the summer it is brilliant for walking - my daughter saw a black bear just starting to wake and lots of prints around in the ...

Hey Suz,
any chance you could give more detail about where the "Butchers Kitchen" is-sounds like somewhere I'd like to visit this summer. Is it in the alleys over to the right of the church as you have your back to ski slopes? Any idea what the sign looks like in Bulgarian?

Cheers

Hi Ricky

We went by taxi so I don't know the exact route but the alleys near the church ring a bell. The street/alley was cobbled and our taxi driver came to a dead end where there were some building works going on. I stupidly left the restraurant card in my friends apartment over there. There was a singer inside and we renamed him Danny as he looked like Danny Devito! I was an impromtu, amazing night and very traditional. I hope you find it. Very Happy

re: Back from Bansko last night

For Plovdiv Bansko, go through Sofia. The route is of course longer but the roads are much better than going through the backcountry around Velingrad - I got stuck behind a jack knifed logging truck in a blizzard there a year or so ago and it was squeaky bum time for a while.

Joe if you ignore the cheap beer and alcohol there is nothing else left to go back to-I think.
But keep the faith.Maybe.
Dave Banski you better scream now.

Is that an effective base to have?
New to this forum-Please let me know!
Very Happy Surprised

re: Back from Bansko last night

Mikey, I actually go for the snowboarding, being British and at best only getting two weeks a year on the slopes, like most people we need instruction to improve, something we couldn't afford during our earlier Austrian holiday so Bansko has that to offer at a very reasonable price. I don't know what standard a skier/boarder you are but we found plenty of amazing off piste and great runs including the newly opened Chalin Valog. I don't know what standard a skier/boarder you are but we found plenty of amazing off piste and great runs including the newly opened Chalin Valog. We also found we enjoyed the atmosphere on the slopes to that of our earlier in the year Austrian holiday, but that might be due to Bansko mountain being more snowboard friendly and less alpine style.

If weather conditions are good next year we will go twice, if not it would be the alps second choice. Very Happy

At last someone who talks sense. The newly opened Chalin Valog runs don't exactly suggest Bansko's standing still on capacity. Plus they're bloody good runs.

re: Back from Bansko last night

I have to agree , I looked into buying a place 2 years ago .
was there on the 1st March - unless they get another gondola up and running , in peak season it will take an hr at least to get to the base station.
Between the 3 hr transfer , prices taking a hike .....I wont be back ( not for a while anyway )

Good luck to Bansko , I hope somebody with some power reads these pages. I hate sounding negative , but you have to be honest ......thats what these pages are for .

re: Back from Bansko last night

dd, Chalin Valog is 5 mins car drive, don't evan need to use the gondola and it has a fab slope for beginners and very experienced, I think this will come into it's own if the gondola were to get too busy, if you avoid peak holiday times there are no queues.
