Bank Cards

Some bank machines in Bulgaria are having trouble reading the new chip and pin cards. Check with your bank if your card will be valid.

Also, recently some machines have stopped accepting cards with VISA on them.

Deffinately in Pamporovo and I would have though the same in the other resorts; there are banks that are open during the week where you can obtain cash over the counter.

If you run into this problem, the CROWN exchange booth in Borovets can make a transaction for LEVA on your Debit or Credit Card.

id be careful of using the exchanges for cc transactions, although i will say that we recommend the crown to our guests, as they will barter the exchange rate. Most of the time the problem is not with the card its with the on line connection, Biochim, the atm up on the left past the gondola is usually the worst by far.

The best exchange rates ive found are in the bank under the samokov hotel, in the entrance for the ski storage. 2.86 was the prevailing rate, and they will also do cc ...

re: Bank Cards

You are better off bringing enough Lev with you as the ATM's in the resorts are unreliable.. I have a maestro card which worked in any of the ATMs I tried..

Last year I brought VISA and Maestro (Debit Card) both worked there however, finding an ATM that had money was difficult. Seems that the ATM machines are filled maybe twice a week.
