Bansko:distance to gondola, a different perspective!!

Hi,
Why does it seem so important to everyone to be closest possible to the lifts. In Bansko, I found that being further away from the lifts, I got to know the old town better than most people there. I found some interesting little mehanas with extra friendly staff off the well beaten track which to me, made my stay more than just a snowboarding holiday but a visit to a really interesting village. I stayed in Villa roka last year and purposely booked Luckybansko this year, can't wait!!

I totally agree with this.
You at least get to know the 'real' town as opposed to the seasonal tourist side of town. Wandering around the local mehanas, mixing with the local people, sampling the local food, wine and beer was a real experience and it would be a shame if people don't visit the old town, but it will be their loss. Walked all around it on a rather warm March day this year. Well worth getting of the tourist track and the supermarket in the old town is quite a bit cheaper than the shops closer to the gondala.

You can have both you know, its not mutually exclusive. ie be close to the Gondola and get out in to the old town... We certainly did last year and will be this year. Under a ten minute walk to the gondola and hotel is BnB only so we were out every night.

I like walking up to the gondola earlyish in the morning, before the rush, and walking back on my own in the evenings - without having to wait around for or try and find your transfer bus in the crowds of others...
