SOFIA (bnn)- Bulgaria was dealing Wednesday with the aftermath of strong winds and torrential rains that drowned one man, severed power lines and caused floods in 13 districts.

A 56 year-old man drowned in the remote southern village of Chernoochene as a swollen river submerged a ground floor cafe he was sitting in.

Wind, gusting at 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour, ravaged roofs, uprooted trees and broke window panes in the town of Veliko Tarnovo and across norhteastern Bulgaria.

Torrential rain of up to 83 liters (22 gallons) per sq. meter (1.19 sq. yards) along with melting snow made rivers swell in the mountainous southern regions of Kardzhali and Smolyan flooding dozens of villages and small towns.

The wind has cut power lines to a total of 240 villages across the country, minister in charge of emergencies Filiz Hyusmenova said.

She said another 42 villages had nor running water as power outages disabled pumping stations. Fifteen villages had their telephone lines down. /bnn/
