Bansko Report

I have not posted here for a long while, but feeling much better now, so here I am again.
Went to Bansko last week. Was quite worried that the new hotels and many tourist have spoilt the place. I am pleased to say that it has not changed that much. The charm is still there (e.g. dark muddy roads at night, with pictures of dead people on the doors, as somebody wrote a couple of years ago). Mehanas are still serving nice food and pists are cared for well. We had a heavy snow, it snowed for one whole day and a night and there was about 50cm new snow the next day on the slopes. So there should be plenty at least until the end of March. (don't know about more recent the storm).
All in all, still quite enjoyable place, so I will keep my name for another season.
Was also in Borovetz and Vitosha for a day or two, but don't bother going there if you want good skiing.
Have to admit that I also visited Garmisch Partenkirchen a few weeks ago and it had more skiing and lifts than Bansko. It was beautiful too. But a local told me that "this is the best snow we have had for decades". I nearly said that snow must there be normally quite poor, but noticed in time that this was going to cause offence, so just said "great!". What I mean is, I see such good snow every season in Bansko. Garmisch is actually much lower than Bansko, if we ignore the gletcher, so perhaps it tends to thaw more quickly on the lower slopes.
Anyway, that's my skiing for this season, another row of "best days" or nearly "best days". Speak to you next season, hopefully with something more memorable.
