Bansko Review

Hi all,

Just back from Bansko for the first time.

We went with Balkan Holidays and stayed at the Strazhite Hotel which was just fandabedozy, I thought it was going to be a bit Scudsy but was really surprised, we had a family room which had two beds upstairs in a kind of loft thing which was fun on the first day but by day three when you could hardly walk anymore it was a nightmare if you forgot something and had to go back up stairs!

The food in the Hotel was not all that and by the end of the week i had a serious Spam addiction going but ive found a friendly support group over here so i should be ok! Other Hotel stuff.... Hot Chocolate is to die for, make sure you have one (every day) Swimming pool and sauana/steam room was really lovely and clean, Massage, what can i say! everyone reccommmends having a massage which is only about £7 squid for half an hour, I was in soo much leg pain that I went for one....Well! this has to be the most spiteful massage ive ever had! at one point I thought he was going to wet a tea towel and start flicking me with it!! no, seriously the massage was painful but did help.

Ski School, My instructor was called Bobbie and he was a total Bless! really patient and very keen that we all improved (easier said than done,) I hadnt skied for about Twenty years but by wednesday i felt more confident and had picked it all up agin. On your first day its really tempting to ski back down the ski road.. Dont!! If you are beginner or rusty like me and you have spent your first day sidestepping up the Nursery slopes you will be tired out and then skiing another five miles is just overdoing it,
We went to a fab Mehana which translates to 'The Bansko Bandit' and had just the best meal, drink, food, great entertainment for three people all for around thiry quid! Barg,
I took £250 on hols but unbelievably i only spent £70 squid and that included a 25 lev tip for my instructor!! admittedly i dont drink loads but i never skimped at all, Bansko is just great value for money, we had a 12" chocolate pancake at a little stall and it was only 1 lev (about 40p, mad!!)
All in all we had a great time and were really lucky - No injurys or problems and all my fears (from reports on this forum) about being scammed, ripped off in a taxi, accosted by beggars, carried off by a bear (ok, i made that one up) were unfounded.
If you are off to bansko you will have a great time, Enjoy!!! (and please bring me some spam back)

Fee, you could get a deal with a publisher as a travel writer - if only Rough Guides were as entertaining. Spiteful massage for £7 sounds too good to miss. Thanks for posting.

re: Bansko Review

Are we OK to drink the tap water in Bansko?

re: Bansko Review

The tap water was excellent. We took a couples of bottles of water but saved them for the plane on the way home. You should have no problems. Mal

re: Bansko Review

The tap water tasted better than the bottled water. I drank gallons of the stuff (even took it up the mountain in "used" bottles...what a cheapskate!). Leaves more money for the more alluring beverages!
And I'll be having some more next week as we're back out there.

All the best John.
