my friends have been to resorts in france and italy where they have plenty of snow cannons, but claimed they were never in use... according to their website the bansko resort has 100% snow cannons, does anybody actually know if they are always in use if there is not enough snow and cold enough to use them?
Dont worry Dean, the cannons in Bansko are actually used very well.
This past season was very poor for natural snow, but due to the cannons in Bansko being on at the earliest opportunity a good base was built up, it has to be said though that 100% is misleading as there are no cannons on the top of the mountain, this said it is very rare that there is a shortage at the top, most other pistes have either cannons installed along the piste or have a water supply that the mobile guns can be ...

The mobile cannons can make an amazing amount of snow in a short time, and they use these to make big heaps of snow that they push onto the areas not fully covered, now that run 12 is to have them installed it is possible that all the runs can be covered in artificial snow even if they dont all have full coverage, this may be where the 100% figure comes from.
Hopefully by the end of Jan there will be plenty of natural snow (it does ski better), you will have a great time, no the last year or two have been an exception, would expect you will have plenty of snow dont worry just look forward to a fun time cheap booze, cheap food, (off the mountain) and a welcoming atmosphere, enjoy.!!
yeah looking at the last 2 years, booking end of january did seem a bit of a risk as end of february beginning of march have had the better snow... thats why i was worried about the snow cannons, but lets just hope the snow returns back to normal, and allow the people going at christmas to have a good time (skiing obviously )
