Bansko-The Future

Following our much reported trip to Bansko, last week, as promised, here are some thoughts and indeed Facts obtained from the International Ski Club of Journalists who were staying at the Strazhite during our stay.

Following our much reported trip to Bansko, last week, as promised, here are some thoughts and indeed Facts obtained from the International Ski Club of Journalists who were staying at the Strazhite during our stay.

This Club have met every Year at a Different resort throughout Europe since 1956 and the extent of their visit can be judged by the fact that i was lead to believe that the President of Bulgaria himself made a visit and gave a presentation on Wednesday last week to them at the Strazhite.

This was one of the first chances for Bulgaria to show Credence to their Olympic Bid for 2014 to the Worlds Press ( although not an official event ) and most Countries were represented although the Events that followed throughout the week, Slalom Race, Cross Country Race, Besom Fashion Shows, Visit by Marc Giradelli etc are part of the Clubs normal Itenary.

Facts on Bansko
An Airport is scheduled to be built within Six Years, within Three if Bid is Successful ( this looks extremely viable given the amount of Flat land available when viewed from the Mountain )
The completion of the Main Sofia to Athens Highway which has been under construction for many years will be expedited cutting transfer time from Sofia.
Further Ski areas and subsequent Godolas and Lift systems are promised in Bansko to ensure the Viability as a genuine Venue.
Bansko is one of Three areas expected to be utilised for the bid.
A huge program will unfold with International help promised, to ensure the infrastructure in the Towns and Mountain Resorts including Customer Service etc is met head on and designed in the by now usual enviroment friendly way.

Thoughts on Bansko

Having read Pamperovo Petes thoughts on this a couple of days ago, i have to say that i agree with him and also the Journalists i Talked to.
Bulgaria may well be ready by 2014 but not by decision day in a couple of Years time.
Having been to the Albertville Games in 1992 spread over the Three Valleys ( Albeit Fourteen Years ago )and having also been to World Cup Events ( more recent) the infrastructure required is Massive. Just thinking back to the areas required by Television and Media companies alone makes my Toes curl up. I dont believe that the Three Venues are ready to accept the huge changes either as there is still raw nerves in Bansko now with the Developments so far completely changing the outlook for Bulgarian Residents.

British buying Proprety abroad
The French and Belgium Journalists turned the conversation to the above subject and i have to say, showed an obvious disdain towards our recent culture of Buying anything thats nailed down.
The large majority of new property in Bansko has been sold to people from the U.K. and there thoughts were that it would soon become like Tuscany, Spain and Portugal.
i hope these thoughts do not affect the Bid as we all know that the people who in the main, buy on the Costa Del Sol etc are a different Market to the Ski World in every way.
I can only think that the resentment is caused by the differing Economies in our Countries and the Current ability of the British to use the Equity in Property to buy these investments.

My Head tells me that this bid will be unsuccessful due to the unrealistic time schedule of fullfilling the requirements of the I.O.C.
As i hail from a City ( Manchester ) with two failed Bids under our belts ( albeit Summer Games ) i can tell you that the cost of the bids alone were astronomical and the demands of the I.O.C. Strenuous.

My Heart tells me that if this is what the People of this Wonderful Land want and feel will expedite their Status within the European Ski Market in particular and also go some way to developing the Country as a whole, then let their wish be granted.

The above are True Facts ( from the Mouths of Journalists themselves ) and True Thoughts and are not intended to offend anyone in any way.

Kindest Regards
Lord Lewis of Marston

re: Bansko-The Future

Thank you for your thoughts. Whether the bid is successful or not, I hope they continue to make improvements in Bansko and the other resorts. I also hope the improvements do not spoil the charm of this little town and the beauty of the mountains.
