re: Bansko christmas 2012 too early

Last year the snow was great, but historically over the past few years Christmas has been a bit hit and miss. Providing temperatures are low and snow canons are going the slopes that are fed by canons should be ok but other slopes may not be open. So beginners may be ok but advanced skiers might struggle if snow is lacking.

The pistes in Bansko are covered by snow-cannons, the exception being the very top of the mountain, where if there is any chance of snow, its more likely to have cover... The concentration of cannons are to service the main nursury area, the ski road, and the blue 1 circuit.. Reds 7 and 8 normally also get well covered, as does Tomba... Last season we skied on December 8th, no appreciable natural snow fall but had a reasonable day on piste.. my interest is off-piste so not a great day for me ...

To sum up whether it would be a 'good ski experience' is down to the individual, you will be able to ski for certain, but as for fantastic conditions ? the snow started falling last season on December 22nd, and continued basically all season, Christmas last year was awesome, and was enjoyed by the largest number of visitors that Bansko had ever seen for a Christmas period Wink

Agree with snow white.
Snow cannons are just to cover up, patch up and prolong by few weeks (hopefully) the season but no normal ski resort can rely on snow cannons along.
What is has been last or season before, it has been.
To be fair the chances for the same winter as last statistically are mega slim but there will be snow on the mountains for sure and there will be skiing somewhere .
That does not stop me from dreaming and hoping to experience similar season as the last one with ...
