Bansko conditions today 19/02/2014

Decided to go up today, not so busy for a half term, in fact we would say it possibly is half as busy as normal. We know that the UK half term is now spread over 2 weeks, but the queuing is almost non-existent on the mountain, and not to bad at the gondola. We were expecting ice, to be honest i was apprehensive about going up until it softened, but went anyway. What a surprise, red 8, our first run was skiing brilliantly, hard pack but with enough give to allow decent carving, and this continued on the top pistes, even the off-piste was decent, hard pack and bobbly, but great fun.. Run after run, not finding any real issues, sticking mostly to reds and blacks, but with so much grip, even lower ability skiers were having a ball... Honestly, i have not had so much fun on piste for a while, the edges where it had been pushed up, soft forgiving snow, almost off-piste conditions, but even the actual off-piste was skiable, hard pack but forgiving again..... Winter wonderland it ain't, don't get me wrong... slushy conditions around the top of the gondola, ski road still running well, but slushy, Challin Valog still open, but again slushy.. but i love slush, my all-mountain 195cm twin tip K2's eat it for breakfast Very Happy

I sit here now reflecting, my legs are aching, my forearms (i pole plant.. old school Wink) are aching also.... I was expecting poor conditions, i was expecting to be skidding sideways on boilerplate ice, i was expecting queues, i was expecting packed pistes........... what i didn't expect was what i got Razz

SP I'd definitely be up for a trip to Bansko especially if they have some gentle blues as i think that may be all i'm able to manage this time around (back still causing no end of grief!)

Spot on Steve!

i was on the mountain today with my 4 and 8yr olds and had a fantastic time. No waiting to speak off on the gondola, or on any of the chair lifts.

did several of the runs and was really impressed with the snow conditions, given the temperatures.

no5 blue seemed in the best nick and was able to ski the whole thing with my youngest between my legs. Never to be repeated though as i am hurting now.

wifes happy as well because she normally suffers with the cold and its pretty warm today.

cannot believe that Ulen have been able to keep the ski road open in these temps.

Hi Steve, we were there yesterday with a bus load of 15 people, saw Wen who told us you were working, also met up with Fraser who was race training with his club.
Have to agree with everything you said in your post, all the runs were skiing a treat.
We left Samokov at 6.00 and drove up the mountain road to the top of the gondola station by 8.25.and were all skiing by 9.00.
Fraser said they were having a blast and was really impressed with the condition of the slopes.

Give credit where it is due, Ulen have done a fantastic job considering the fact that we have had so little snow.
OK it got a bit soft later on but we skied up until 15.00 and then all headed down the ski road which was good, OK had to push a bit for the last 300 meters or so, but then it was 19C.
We will be organising more trips to Bansko for our guests because we want them to have a good skiing holiday.
We love Borovets so why should we have to take our guests to another resort to ski?
Borovets was the number one resort in Bulgaria for many years, come on Borosport get snow cannons on all the slopes and we can still compete.
