I have read a number of publications that stress that the mountainous area around Bansko where the ski slopes and lifts etc is protected against further development under some sort of environmental or heritage clause.
Can anyone with "inside" knowledge add to this e.g. is there absolutely no way that further piste and lift systems can be constructed due to this protection clause?

For the sake of Bansko being able to continue attracting skiers and tourists in general I hope that a suitable compromise can be met or else I, along with thousands of others, really do fear the worst for Bansko. What a crying shame that would be!
That is what people have been saying for ages now, but the reason why it hasn't been given consent is because of this environmental protection clause that is preventing any further development in the area.
Do you live in Bansko? If so, perhaps you could speak with the local authorities to get definite clarification as to the likelihood.
I think the way Bansko is going to go into the future is similar like Sunny Beach -starts with bad news and more bad news ,problems then follows, prices will stay flat or even down, the profits too and then the environment issues will start biting harder.I honestly believe that some hotels/appartments blocks will go down.
Just recently even in BG newpapers the news are not brilliant- less tourists, lowering the hotel prices to save the season, banks starting to be very wary about BG ...

Just recently even in BG newpapers the news are not brilliant- less tourists, lowering the hotel prices to save the season, banks starting to be very wary about BG building projects, concrete jungle mass exodus of even BG tourists from beaches -going to Greece Turkey and pieceful and relaxing locations which are actually cheaper as well, bad infrastructure coupled with constantly rising prices -Please what is going on- recently I cannot see any good news for BG
Who knows what will happen in year or two but anyway Bansko ski runs are in a preservation area so just one law like the one recently about Strandja area in the south east preventing any type of building without right to object and this is it.
Lets hope Borovets is not going to go the same direction like heading into cul-de-sac like Bansko and Sunny B.
