Bansko for Christmas?

I'm currently on the verge of booking a week at the Perun in Bansko for Christmas. I stayed at the Rila earlier this year in Boro and although the location was excellent, I wasn't that impressed with the Hotel. Could anyone give some advice on the standard of the perun compared to the Rila? transfer time from Sofia/Plovdiv? and what are the chances of snow at Christmas?

Many thanks

re: Bansko for Christmas?

It probably makes sense to go to Bansko, due to their extensive snow making systems but the village height is pretty low. We skied both Boro and Bansko in April and although they had lost all the snow in the village at Bansko, the home run back to the Gondola Station was still skiable, thanks to the snow makers. Boro had snow at all levels but was very icy at the top and rocks were coming through at the bottom, so I'd say all in all, Bansko won in the snow stakes, although both resorts have ...

Regarding hotels, can't really advise you on that, except to say, why don't you try a chalet or apartment? It gives you the flexibilty on eating out at different places for little cost and they usually have TV's, CD players etc. so the kids are well looked after - plus they work out pretty cheap.
Good luck, whatever you decide but if I can help further, write to me on denisal@emirates.net.ae

cheers,
Denis

Definately agree with banskoboy....

Personally stayed at the Perun in early March, could not fault it, great food (well, for me anyway!!) great facilities and in a good position for the gondolar (free bus as well if you get tired)

re: Bansko for Christmas?

I stayed in the Perun in March this year and thought it was really super - to the extent I have already booked my return trip back there next March!!

I echo Steve C above in all he says - good food, good location etc. I thought the facilities were lovely - we had a swim and jacuzzi every day and there was lots more to do - have you seen the website: hotelperunbansko.com

As for snow at Christmas - can't comment I am afraid though I personally have always been very dubious of booking ...

As for snow at Christmas - can't comment I am afraid though I personally have always been very dubious of booking skiing at this time of year (having had bad experience of lack of snow twice in the past).

Transfer from Sofia was about 3.5 hours.

Let us know if you want any more info.

re: Bansko for Christmas?

Many thanks for all your comments. It's a definite yes for the Perun now, flying out from MCR on 24th Dec. I was under the impression that the transfer was only around 1 1/2 hours? I flew to Plovdiv in Feb this year and stayed at the Rila in Boro. The transfer was around 3-3 1/2 hours and that is why I have chosen to fly to Sofia this time?!
