Bansko for beginners

Hi, due to fly out for a weeks skiing on Feb 22-This would be first time skiing anywhere.

We have booked with Thomson and have first time package, where would these beginner lessons take place- and this area is it covered by snow cannons?
Also for beginners never skied before, are helmets necessary ? or just plenty of padding on the bottom?

Sorry for all the questions and let the weather watching commence.

Thanks

re:Bansko for beginners

I suppose Bansko has built a reputation as the destination for those choosing their first ski holiday. This has allowed for the area to lend itself to beginners especially, the good value of the beginners package, the level of instruction and the way Bansko can provide the perfect surface for learning. Your first steps will be on the nursury slopes at the top of the gondola, snow cover assured due to the large number of cannons, and the progression putting you on either the 'ski road' (7km piste green/blue) or to Blue 1, a more interesting piste accessed by a high speed 6 man chair, the circuit returning back to the gondola... Helmets are unlikely to be supplied but will be available for hire at a nominal charge... The long range forecast is putting 22nd Feb right in the middle of snowfall, we are hopeful that it will arrive earlier, but it looks good for you Very Happy

Any questions, just ask...

Welcome jimbob.

I've been coming to Bansko annually for the last 6-7 years now - my personal opinion is that it is an excellent place to learn. there are plaeny of places in europe with much bigger ski areas, of course - but when starting out I think you need the right mix of easy-moderate slopes, affordability and places to enjoy the evenings. Bansko definitely has all of these. In the last few years I've also brought my kids out once a year to learn to ski - and they love it there too. ...

I took a group of 10 mates last year - 6 of which had never boarded and they all loved it. To be fair that was partly because of the price of the beer, but not the only reason Smile

So long as you avoid the very busy times like half term (I can't sadly....) - which seems you have by and large.... you'll be fine.

Check some of the posts on this board for places to eat and drink - some good reccomendations on here.

Re: Helmets - I would always say yes - it divides opinion and is a personal choice, but it's obviously not that hard to fall over and smack your head when you're learning - and even for those more experienced, it's not just what you do, its what others around you do also. I wouldn't ride without one.
