Yep, it's well worth it. Went today, and had a great day. Obviously not everything is open, but I was pleasantly surprised with the conditions up top. Very icy first thing, so don't rush on the drive down. No queues either. Bit muddy in places, but hey, such a great day wasn't possible at this time last year. Have a good one, I'll be there again myself tomorrow. Very Happy

re: Bansko here we come....

thanks Nadia that sounds like great news. Are you based in Bansko or Sofia? I was planning to leave Sofia around 8.00, hoping the drive wont take more than about 2 and a half hours...

Hey Dave. I live in Sandanski, a Spa town down by the Greek border on the other side of the Pirin mountain range. As the crow flies it's not far from Bansko, but as we have to drive all the way round it takes us just over an hour. We take the Simitli turn off on the E79 which will be the same as you coming from Sofia. The road is good now, and conditions should be great when you arrive about 10ish. I can see out of my window that it's nice and clear over the mountain... looks like it's gonna ...

re: Bansko here we come....

I'm closest to the Promahonas/Kulata border which is on the E79 highway. From that border it's good roads all the way to Bansko. Actually, the only roads with bad tarmac you'll encounter will be in Bansko itself. Drive up the E79 from the border, through Kresna Gorge, there's a long straight for a mile of so after that, then you'll come to Simitli, slow down to 50km there as there are always police there with radar guns around the corner (if you get caught out bung them 20lv and you won't be ...

Depending on the conditions you may encounter snow and ice in this section, so winter tyres are a good idea. Allow 1hr 40mins from the border I reckon. There are other borders, but I'm not sure if they are open, and I can't vouch for the roads.
