Bansko in March

Hey guys,

Its the first time that me and a few mates are going abroad to get a bit of snowboarding done. We're going to Bansko and were wondering what the snow would be like in the first week of March.

Also, being the first time any of us have been, we were wondering how much it would cost for us for meals and drinks per person and the likely cost for a 6 day ski pass. Just to give us an idea of how much to take for a week in Bansko.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Jonny

Hey Jonny,

Welcome to the site. My name Wendy and I live in Bansko.
Have you booked with a tour op or independantly?? If with tour op go with their packages as it will be much cheaper. If first time go for the begginner snowbaord package. Depends what you looking for and if you have boarded before.
If independent there are many options. If you click on my name you can email me and i can give more in depth details etc.

Average beer in winter is 3.50lv , average meal depending on what you are eating ofcourse 10lv-20lv. An example would be burger n chips in the tourist bars 10-12lv. Pizza average 10lv.
Hope this helps.

re: Bansko in March

Oh and usually 1st week in March is good. We love March skiing. Longer days, snow has usually fallen, and a little warmer than Jan temps.

re: Bansko in March

We booked independently, so was wondering where the best place to book a 6 day pass in advance would be! The prices you have given me on average seem to sound brilliant! Looks like we have chosen the right place to go. We have all boarded/skied before and are renting with j2ski in bansko.

Sounds like the right time of year as well, are there any bulgarian holidays around that time?

I don't think you can book lift pass in advance if you have not gone with a tour operator package - reason being they need your photo on it.

So first day get your 6 day pass and photo (webcam done when you buy the pass at the gondela) .

From memory there are three prices high medium and low season - not sure where your week fits in but it wouldn't be High season. There is a notable difference too.

Were going out 16th March for a lovely week skiing cannot wait. We have skiied in Bansko about 6 times now - not once have we had bad skiing conditions (luck or maybe our expectation levels are not as high as some others?
A beer on the slope is 5lev which equates to £2 .. try that in France (which a number of Friends have and on the slope it can be 15Euros.... £12 or more often than not £8-10 a beer). Clearly having a beer on the slope may not be your thing but it also means grub on the slope is cheap too. In France food up the slope is high and as such many take up food with them - in Bansko you don't need to do that (you can and you would save no doubt but its not really worth it in absoulte £ savings terms). Food can be pizza/meatballs/pasta/chips etc.

In town there is a huge number of places you can choose to eat in. I'd highly recommend you don't opt for the Burger and chips option - try out the local meals they are superb really wholesome food and gut filling.
You can choose Hunters skewer (Lamb for me is my favourite) you get huge large mans fist chunks of meat on it, a Seche it is a clay plate with meat veg all fried and cooked up superb, Peasants Delight - sounds odd and the ingredients may put off some from the UK but its lovely Chicken hearts/gizzards/liver/kidneys all fried up in a lovely sause (have it with home made garlic bread yum) a pittance to buy too.
Cornflake Chicken - again sounds like it shouldn't work it REALLY does (generally a starter)
Shopska salad - a lovely starter
Rockfort chicken.... mmm
Feta Chicken ..mmmm
Venison, Boar / any game they have loads of it.
Feta stuffed long peppers slow roasted..... mmmm
Kamarva - its in a clay pot like a casarole type meal very nice indeed. Honestly on this one or the ones Ive had it doesn't have the wow factor when it comes to your table but it has great flavours.
Fish in my experiance is expensive relative to the other meats and pork dishes are by far the cheapest - but boy do they know how to cook pork.

Generally I'm too stuffed to have desserts so cannot really recall many but homemade icecream is very very good.

Meals are in my experiance not brought up as starter then main instead its brought to the table when its ready so you can have all starters and mains all come at once.... or your specific meal could arrive long after everyone else has finished - this is just the way it is in Bulgaria. You can try to circumvent this by just ordering a starter then eat it then once finished order your main. Or as it should be done - the meal is supposed to be a very long event and designed to be a sharing so put all the meals in the middle and ask for side plates then all tuck in - I'd recommend this

Make sure you try lots of different places to eat and do venture away from the main square. There are nice places near the gondela - though new buildings, but if you go down the small streets you'll find ancient buildings all searving food at a much lower price than the prime positions.

You could taxi it to Razlog for a meal - but frankly I'd not suggest this as getting a taxi back..... good luck plus the taxi cost can nullify the savings found in Razlog.

Beers vary in price in Bansko town - but even going to the Apres Ski venue the Happy end (base of the gondela) its about £1.40-1.60 a beer while you go elsewhere it can be as low as 1lev or 1.5lev £0.40-0.60. But in eifer case its drastically cheaper than what I have to pay in London £5-6 a beer..

As a guide I'd say food and drink budget for 7 nights assuming Room only and 2 meals a day (you dont need brekkie after an evening feast) - £20 per person per day should be ample. And if your looking at getting in at 4-6am every day then add some more onto that but not a huge amount.

Most of all enjoy.

Note I can highly recommend Steve C & Wendy if your looking for great transfers.

re: Bansko in March

I can get pre-booked passes. You do not need your picture on these as they are from a Tour Operator. You will not get them any cheaper than the going rate but you will have them the day you arrive so no queue's for passes on first day etc etc ...........

As I said if you email by clicking my name I can give you more details on things. You am not allowed to state prices on this forum if it coincides with what the site itself offers guests.

In winter though the average price for a beer is 3lv. In the summer yes you can get cheaper. Some bars 2.50lv such as the friendly which is a great bar with a great band.

Gareth - I only gave burger and chips option as an example. The local Mehana's(restaurants) are great places to eat to try out the local cuisine and are very good value. Baryakovo a big fave of ours never fails to give great food and service and most of our guests who have been there on our reccommendation have had a fantastic meal and evening. Top of town does tend to be more tourist bars. Where as down Pirin street into the old town as Gareth says you can find great eating houses etc etc.

Gareth, thanks for the recommendation mate we try our best always Wink
