Bansko report

Just back from Bansko. Flying to Plovdiv Airport is an experience every person should have. It is crap but at the start of your holiday is does make you laugh. We caught a taxi instead of thr coach. Ofcourse we choose the ONLY taxi in Bulgaria that did not know how to get to Bansko. We only realised this when he started to flag down passing cars with a map in his hand. Ofcourse we choose the ONLY taxi in Bulgaria that did not know how to get to Bansko. We only realised this when he started to flag down passing cars with a map in his hand. Three hours and three sore arses later ( due to the condition of the road!! ) we arrived in Bansko and to the glorious Hotel Perun! Wihout a doubt the best hotel in the resort. The facilities in this place were great ( for Bulgaria ). The food was ofcourse poor but it was a small price to pay. Breakfast was fine and filling. We had our own equipment so ALL the people complaining about the farce in the morning getting their hire gear did not fase us. I would advise you all to wait until the afternoon to get your gear. Spend the morning in the spa etc rather than stress out on day one. Waiting times seemed to average at 3 hours! Snow fell for the first 48 ( ish ) hours which was great except right up the top the wind would blow your whiskers off. Still great fun though! Drink is cheap, food in resonable restaurants is also cheap. Bansko is also much better than Borovets. I cannot comment on Pamps as I have not been there. One thing about Bansko is that there are less hookers walking around compared to Borovets. The runs were good with some REDS bordering on Black due to the heavy snow and moguls appearing. PLEASE visit the old town, it is a good 20 min walk from the Gondola but well worth it. There is also a couple of clubs there. We generally had a sing song in the bar just outside the Perun, then off to the Hotel Lion opposite as they have a small but friendly nightclub in the basement. You can get away with much down there it was very relaxed. I met many people and heard that some people were there from Dubai, Aberdeen etc. It is well worth the small amount of money you pay. It is great for kids ( 5 and up ) and I heartily recommend the Perun. Outdoor heated pool! enough said

re: Bansko report

Hi, just back myself on Saturday, did you get held up on the way back in Plovdiv like us because their computers crashed? Your review made me chuckle to myself as everything you said was exactly what I was thinking of writing. I organised the trip for 15 of us and it started off bad because most of them were in the Q for equipment for 4hrs on the first day but the week could only get better from then on and it did. Stayed at the Pirin, nice hotel, food was poor but it didn't poison us. ...

Stayed at the Pirin, nice hotel, food was poor but it didn't poison us. Skiing was excellent but a bit too lumpy for me later in the afternoon, a far better resort than Boro, may give Pamps a go next year, though it does look quite small on the piste maps.

re: Bansko report

Hi, I hope you don't mind me asking vut I have read somewhere that it is quicker to hire your skis from Intersport and the people are friendlier there than Ulen? Do you think we will still have to queue for hours to buy lift pass and arrange tuition? What would be the best time to get ther if we do go in the morning? We were thinking 8? Any other tips, did you hire a ski locker at the gondola?

re: Bansko report

bandai,

Bansko Sport on the right on the way up to the Gondola (if they are still there) is a good friendly place to hire skis and arrange lessons
