Going to Bansko for first time on 5th March staying at the Perun.

Can anyone please give me details on the Balkan Holidays ski school/learn to ski pack.

Any details such as timings, abilty groups etc would be great.........its 10 years since I've been skiing!

re: Bansko ski school questions

For absolute beginners they group you all together, although theree is scope to be moved up if you progress well.

For those who've skiied before they give you a couple of turns to do while they watch and then put you in groups with folk about the same level. Again, if they don't get it right on the first morning peple can move - just ask the instructor.

Lessons tend to start at 10.00, so time for a couple of extra runs before (and perhaps a hot cholcolate and rum!)

I'd say get there ...

I'd say get there as early as you can on the first morning and get allocated a group and off you go - we only waited a couple of minutes and we were off. This also helps at the boot and ski hire place where the queues are shorter early on.

Hope you enjoy it!

You'll get there quite late on the saturday evening and then following morning you will have to be at the gondalo station for between 9 and 11 on the sunday morning to collect your gear(next door to the gents toilets(that'll mean something to you when you get on the bus!!)). The early you get there the better, when we were all finsihed getting our gear at 10 ish the que was gettin VERY big.

From there you will go up the gondalo which takes about 20-25mins and then when you get to the top of it, you'll walk down some steps and if you turn straight to your left, about 150-200yrs away will be a big sign sayin "Ski School Meeting Point". Just walk over there and they'll ask you if you've skiied before and if you have you'll be made to go down this lil slope to show them your skills then they'll put you in a group according to you abilities.

If you havent skiied before like my mum and aunty you will be put in a complete beginners group where you will start going up and down the baby drag for this first day then you will progress onto the drag which you can see as soon as you get of the Gondalo. Then by the end of the week the week you will go down from the top of the moutain (run 10, then a lil bit of 5 and 4, then down 1). Both my mum and aunty said they loved it and never stopped laughing all day!)

Timings, well its official 10-3 with a 1hr break in the middle. On Avergae you start you lessons about 10:15 and finish about 3:20 and have about a 40min break in the middle. You'll eat your lunch with your group and instructor. The timings on your first day are different however, starting at 11 and finishing at 4.

Have fun, im SO jealous of you going and if theres anymore questions you want answering, just message me!

re: Bansko ski school questions

We're staying at the Devonshire Lodge (run by an English couple, very helpful), and they've arranged a private instructor for a group of four of us, for six days, four hours a day for £150. Less than for one in a school in france.

You can find them easy on the internet. Mention my name.

re: Bansko ski school questions

Iain & Paul,

Many thanks for the detailed info. Looks like an early start is the best thing for the Sunday morning, then hopefully a little practice on my own before being allocated into the ski school.

cheers folks & here's to the 5th March
