I'm off to Bansko for the first time on 15th March next year. Know its a bit early but was wondering about the best Bulgarian type places to eat and drink as opposed to the British bars etc. Want to try and get a taste of the country if possible.
Thanks in advance, any others from this forum out there that time?
Go down into the old town , not on the main road, go down the cobbled roads behind the church. there are lots of good Mehanas, at sensible prices, not like up by the gondola.
I recommend Gusoka and Baryakova, but there are lots of other good ones
Hi Chutney. I will be in Bansko with 1 0r2 others around that time.
As Dave has said head into the old town away from Gondola try and pick one that does not have a tout outside trying to lure you in.
almost agree with Daniel Snell, although as you go down Pirin St towards town, there is a mehana on the right hand side, just after the first bunch of souvenir shops (i.e. about 50 yards before you get to lions). it's almost opposite the strazhite...
i don't know what it is called but it generally has a guy outside with a poncho on trying to get you in! It's worth a visit as I've never had a bad meal there...
Always forget the names of the restuarants but agree with everyone above and a couple of recommendations from me would be; firstly a mehena on the left as you go down the main street from the gondola to the main square, it is roughly half way down and think it is opposite an american style piza place, relatively small but great staff and lovely food. Secondly going down the same street at the last cross roads before you get to the church / memorial turn left and there is a larger mehena on ...

Secondly going down the same street at the last cross roads before you get to the church / memorial turn left and there is a larger mehena on your right, you go down some steps from the main door and it is lovely. We are in Bansko around this time so we will be eating at both these places, don;t take my place
agree with dan about the one you go down the stairs really good food. There is also one as you enter the main town a good 20 min walk from the gondla has a large tuborg bottle on the roof, excellent food good price too, mainly bulgarians eating there.
