Bansko

I have recently booked my annual Bulgaria ski holiday (were going over new year), I have been to Borovets for the last 7-8 years but have now decided to give Bansko a go.

Is it right that all of the slopes in bansko are covered with snow cannons?

I would like to eventually like to try Heli-skiing, however I need to brush up on my Off-piste skills before then, is there much oportunity for this in Bansko? Does anyone know of any guides/instructors in bansko that are reasonablly priced

re: Bansko

Hi Grant
Most if not all of the slopes are covered by the cannons which will obviously only run if the temps are cold enough..
I gather there is quite a bit of off piste although I haven't tried it myself yet - Steve C on this board does off piste guiding.

re: Bansko

Here we go, a big statement, but Bansko has the highest concentration of snow cannons per km in Europe, over 220 now serve 55km...
The off-piste here can be quite stiff, and not for the faint hearted, but there are areas where you can perfect your skills... Officially there is no off-piste if you are to observe all the notices in the Ulen offices, but they are just protecting themselves, there seems no controls on where you can ski (unlike the Alps)...
As this is a National Park there is ...

As this is a National Park there is no motorised access including helicopters (unless you are the primeminister/film crew/very rich/know the pilot) but areas are accessed by walking/climbing, and some simply by skiing off the piste...
Off-piste is condition dependant so keep your fingers crossed, i guide, perhaps better to take an advanced lesson concentrating on your technique, and you will discover the areas when being taught....

re: Bansko

Sorry Steve, I think that 'big statement' may not be correct. I think Font Romeu (France) has the greatest concentration of snow cannons - 500/58Km. However, it is quite incredible the snow making ability of Bansko. I am heading there on 13th feb and can't wait.

re: Bansko

Judge, i'll stand corrected Very Happy admittedly i did not search intensively, but as you state, its still pretty impressive in Bansko, and it would be interesting to measure the pistes actually covered by cannons, as i think it would measure considerably less than the quoted 55km...
If its any consolation they are running flat out at the moment, as its blooming freezing Razz

re: Bansko

Steve - Do you think the big race for the opening will go ahead tomorrow? Looking at the cams today, hard to imagine there being enough snow (from the cannons) by then...

re: Bansko

We are told that it will, likely they will only use the bottom half of Tomba... Like you we are sceptical but will go up anyway. Our little girl has never been on the gondola, and with all that is being laid on, fireworks etc, we think should be quite good Very Happy
