Bulgaria Ski discussion board

I have a partner and two children who have finally agreed that we should go skiing. I managed to drag them (screaming and kicking almost) on to a plastic slope at the weekend, and they all loved it. Couldn't have gone better, once mum had fallen down, they all wanted to......

So now agree on a holiday. As a first we would like to keep the cost down. And am looking for advice as to good places for the children and training slopes. Also if we go self catering (the children can be fussy little blighters....) does any know of good suggestions.

None of us have been to Bulgaria, but for value for money its had some excellent recommendations.

All recommendations and suggestions greatly received.

Your right Neil, almost impossible to beat for value for money.

I'm off to Bansko this time, but for a first time family such as yours, I would not suggest you do the same. Went to Pamp in Feb and had a fantastic time - great ski school (for those that needed it) plently of easy slopes and really nice atmosphere to the place.

Eating out is fabulously cheap, though most hotels seem to get everyone in on a half board basis - if you get lucky and have decent food, then great, but if not just go out to eat anyway......

Sure some people will suggest Boro, but having never been, I won't try to compare the 2 resorts.

I have only been to Borovets so can only comment on that. We have been twice with two different families with us, both had fussy eaters!! We stayed once in the Rila half board which was fine for food, there was a huge choice so usually something for everyone, our fussy ones found things they liked easily enough anyway. We also stayed in Yagoda chalets, we were half board there too but they have facilities for self catering but are VERY basic, I wouldnt fancy trying it. Also Yagoda was too far out for us we didnt like the ski busses!! I dont think there are really food shops either to cook for yourselves, though I may be mistaken. Anyway there is a lot of variety in borovets for eating out and its so cheap to that personally i think its best to go half board then if you dont like whats on offer, eat out anyway.

As for slopes, both the families we went with had never skiied before and found plenty of beginner slopes to keep them ocupied all week, they didn't even take lessons, I taught them!!

How old are the children??

We have been the last 2 years to Borovets. In yr 1 we booked with Inghams and used their English run Kindergarten which was absolutely excellent. Great for new skiers under 8. Kids ski twice per day for about 3 hours in total and are fed luch, equipped and looked after for 6 days for under £100!!

We stayed at the Yagoda Village the first year and agree it is a little far out. Self catering is difficult as you can't really buy provsioins even if you wanted to without going into the larger town of Samokov which is not practical. We ate out each night and the food was always excellent and cheap.

This Feb we stayed in the Alpin and went B&B. Stayed in town which was better but we personally enjoy the flexibility of eating out and saved money by not paying for half board when we didn't want it!
