Hi,
We've just come back from a great week in Bansko but my boyfriend had his snowboard stolen on Friday from one of the stands outside a cafe by the gondola station. It was locked up and we only left it for about 15 mins whilst we got a coffee. Apparently this is quite common on a friday as the locals come back and the boards/ski's get taken and sold in Borovets or Pamporovo. They sometimes take rentals as well so just be aware and keep you equipment in sight at all times

re: Board & Ski Theft
Jess,
Good warning for all to heed, Exactly the same thing happened to us in France 3 years ago -- Skis and boards were stolen the day before change over day............ When we asked around it turns out it was quite common, the equipment is stolen from you, then when you turn up at the rental office in the morning you are charged a ridiculous excess on your rental and advised to claim back on your insurance.............
dare i suggest a little scam going on ...

Sad to hear, but there is no proof to say your board was taken by locals
I second that Pete, unfortunately some visitors from other countries are a little handy when it comes to errrrr putting stuff in the back of their cars, and slipping back to Greece/Romania/Serbia....
What is quite common also is people picking up the wrong skis/boards, especially at the base of the mountain where they do not need to clip in... especially after a couple of drinks. This normally is with hire equipment, but can be a right hassle the next morning when you are on the mountain ...

This normally is with hire equipment, but can be a right hassle the next morning when you are on the mountain and your boots do not fit your skis. Always remember the number/make/model of your ski/board so as not to make this mistake....
A good option is to have skis like mine, that are soooooooo glaringly ugly and fat that no one would want to steal them
dont leave your skis in pairs do what we do mix and match then leave each pair a reasonable distants apart no one wants odd skis and they wont go looking for the pairs as would bring attention to themselves. unfortunatly cant do that with snow boards!!!
Yeah, fair point we haven't got any firm proof, it's just what we had heard that from a few people we got friendly with who work in Bankso. They said that a board is probably about a months wages for someone.
