Boarding the Bansko ski road.

One of the most oft asked questions from boarders about Bko.....

When I went xmas it was not really viable but last week it was possible.....just.

How you approach it depends mainly on your ability. If you're a complete learner it's like any other mainly shallow slope, and you'll feel quite at home. There is a bit of a gradient in the middle but nothing to get too excited about. Could take you anywhere from 2hrs up, so take a packed lunch and a flask. If you leave it till later in the ...

If you leave it till later in the day take a torch. In fact if you're really green you could make a day (or even holiday) of it.

If you're an intermediate you'll probably hate it......especially if you're one of those riders prone to catching an edge.

If you're reasonably good it can be done in a little over 10mins, depending on conditions. You need to be able to ride washboard at about 35mph, maintain complete momentum at all times, avoid all the other prostrate boarders (and skiers)...and have feet of iron.

Purely in the interests of research I did it four times. Beat the skiers down first time, overtaken by a one or two on the other occassions. The snow ranged from softish to hardish and I got down once without unclipping (bit of doggy paddle though), but unclipped up to four times on other occassions. The bottom goes uphill on occassions....a day with a dozer and it would make the world of difference. Or build a bar half way down....it would be very popular.

Ride the gondola then ride the road. It will be a choice between the lesser of two evils. Depends mainly on your garlic tolerance.

John.

Cheers. Glad you saw the funny side.

It is hard work on a board (and skis to some extent), though it is possible.
You can take the "Ski Road No.2" to the mid station of the gondola, but again you will unclip once (at least). Sort of a happy medium. I did it one day when they shut the long four man (early), bottom of the "12".

All the best, John.
