Good Morning. I'm due to go to Borovets on 3rd Feb for a week, stayikng at the Rila Studios. Anyone out there give me an HONEST opinion of what it's like (I'm off with the wife and two children). Also, what would a pair of boots cost in a local ski shop?
Boots are reasonably cheap (I was in the Rossingnol store on the weekend and the best ones there were around 500 leva / 250 euro). BUT they don't have competent boot fitters who can melt the boot to fit your feet. Having bought boots both here and with a specialist fitter (in the US) I would say buy at home. You can always go back to the store for further adjustments if necessary too.
We'll be there at the same time, returning after a great week last year. Rila is big, right in the centre and probably the most modern of the hotels. The only criticism is that the walls are a little thin (we are trying the Samakov this time). Ski schools on the whole are excellent, with the odd instructor who isn't bothered.
As far as the boots go, it depends what you want, but paying between 60-75% of what it costs in the UK is a reasonable guide. If you are unsure it would be worth ...

You should have a great time, and if Benson and Hornster are right you will have a reasonable amount of snow. See you there!!!
We stayed in the Rila Studios over Christmas, The rooms are basic but clean. The kids (12 & 14) had no problems with the bunk beds, lots of hot water for the shower. one tip take a bath plug and sink plug (99p each in homebase) as sometimes they are missing. Anyway can't be that bad were going again next year. one last thing go with an open mind and don't set your sights to high and you WILL have a fantastic time we did
Hi Will, thanks for that. I think people tend to set their sights too high and that's why it gets bad press. I hear the ski shop in the hotel is cheap. I need to get sunglasses and a few thermals. Would you recommend I wait until I get out there?
Richard
They do sell sun glasses in the hotel but not sure how much, Google were 40lev (£14 ish) and you should be able to buy thermals out there. There are lots of shops within 5min walk of the Rila
