Borovets, what's it really like?

Hello,
We're going to borovets for the first time on 28th jan. So many conflicting reports about weather, strikes, and hotels. Is anyone able to tell me what it's really like and why the slopes are not open yet (apart from strike)?
Is it worth buying boots out there as opposed to the UK?

Thanks Cool

My family and I have visited boro twice and are going again for christmas,The people are very friendly and seem very genuine towards tourists.
The food in the hotels is not great and i would suggest eating out in the evening, this also helps with the enjoyment of your holiday as mixing with the locals and other visitors, all bars are welcoming.
I would reccommend booking ski school as it helps to improve your skiing but also your instructor will show you all the different ski runs suitable ...

The slopes are probably better suited to beginner/intermediate and we found just perfect for pleasure skiing. We,ve only had 1 lift break down and it was fixed within 20 mins so not really that serious.
Overall a great holiday was had and comes highly reccommended.
Hope this helps..ps dont take any notice of the strike..

regard Peter

I was in boro in Jan and stayed at the Rila. The hotel was clean and comfortable and the food wasnt too bad.
Locals are very friendly and food is good in the restaurants.

Hiya,

I will also be there on the 28th! What hotel are you booked into?? Have been before and can assure you it's fantastic, would agree it's worth skipping the evening meal! Plenty of variety to eat out very cheaply. Boots would be much cheaper over there...

to answer your question regarding boots

MJ,
As all the posters before me have said in this thread Borovets is fine, The skiing is a little tame, but personally it suits me as im not much of a thrill seeker these days.
there are 2 main hotels in town the Rila and the Samokov,
Both are ok, personally i prefer thr Rila as it has a nice lobby bar with views straight out to the slopes, but the Samokov is fine too.there are also smaller hotels with new one opening all the time.

To answer your question regarding boots, my advice is to bite the bullet and buy here in the UK before you go.I bought mine here a few years ago, go somewhere where they carefully measure your feet, The shop keeper i went to spent 2 hours with me in the shop selecting the correct boot and i must say they are very good and fit perfectly.
might cost you a couple of hundred but worth it as a badly fitted boot could ruin your skiing holiday costing you a lot more, inc pain.
hope this helps.
