Borovets - Just back

As mentioned on an earlier thread, it's awesome out there right now. We skiied some deep powder up the top of the gondola and found conditions on most upper slopes really good. The green run connecting most of the top runs to the lower runs on the left side of the mountain was an ice rink though and for the intermediates in the group there was no long run down the mountain on blues. re: Borovets - Just back

Hi Nei. we are staying at Hotel Rila, my other half and kids never been (only dry lessons), so great for ski school etc. However, I've been about 10 times, last time 10 years ago, so don't know how I will be (a lot less fit now!), How far is the gondola away from the Rila, walking distance, or hop on a bus? Does the ski school (intermediates) use the Gondola or do they stick to the runs outside the Rila. Any advise greatly appreciated. Ta. Yvette

You can ski down to the Gondola from the Rila in a few minutes, you can even do it without going along the road but I can't remember where you turn off. That means you have to walk back up though, which hurt me because of the rented boots. If you finish on one of the reds or the green there are taxis, and horse and carts waiting to take people back up to Rila, you should expect to pay about 10 lev. Be careful not to get stuck on the cross country, I don't know about you but my skating isn't ...

Intermediates will definitely go up the Gondola, the snow is better there and the blue and red runs are wide and smooth and served by lots of drags. Get to the gondola as early as you can, the queues get very long after 9:30 until lunch, but before and after you can walk pretty much straight on. Finally, have a great time!
